mib - 18 Feb 2007 20:14 GMT Hello to all
Currently working on my padi open water.
Question.
In September were planning to go to Sharm.
My Mrs wont be diving and I would just like to spend a 3 to 4 mornings diving.
Anyone got any thoughts on a decent hotel and dive school

Even if your SWMBO won't dive, she can still join you on the boat - but you'd have to clear this with the boat and pay a fee - she might be taking up the space of a paying diver.
Short of that there is a central hotel which advertises dives off their own beach "for those who don't wish to commit to a full day's boat diving".
They're Ocean College (www.ocean-college.com) , working with Exlorers (www.explorers.co.uk) when staying at the Hilton Waterfalls. There may be others I don't know about (a Rumsfeldt moment coming on!) but these I do know do this.
Alternatively if you decide to do a dive pig WITHOUT non-divers in your party, stay at the Ocean Bay.

They have a little dive shop on the front and the hotel is very good. The organisation is like clockwork. However as Ken says most diving is full day on the boats.
Have a great holiday.

Since it opened, I've never stayed anywhere else! It used to be the Naama Bay Hotel before, but no more.

My recollection is that they're two different hotels. Naama Bay is on the main drag opposite the Hard Rock Cafe and the Ocean Bay is round the back.
I'm staying in the Naama Bay next week, so I'll check it out and report back.

You're quite right, it is my inadequate means of expression at fault. What I meant to say was that I used to stay at the Naama Bay, but have stayed nowehere other than the Ocean Bay since IT opened. The Naama Bay Hotel remains and flourishing. However for the "dive pig" who gets up in the morning and dives all and every day until returning home, there's little point paying for all the facilities of a big hotel which he might never use - hence the place of the Ocean Bay.
Now - to another question, related of course - not too much off topic. There is a 50:50 chance that I might persuade my wife (gets nervous when the water gets mid-thigh, NEVER out of her depth) to join my son and I when we go diving at Sharm next, possibly in July. In this case I'll book us all in to a nicer hotel so my wife can soak up rays while Tom and I seim with rays instead.
I fancy one of the Hiltons for this. Not the new one at Shark's Bay, I like to go in to Naama Bay of an evening. The Waterfals is the least well placed for this BUT has a dive centre within ints walls. Fayrouz and Sharm Dreams are eually well located, but it's a (small) trek to the dive centre for registration etc.
Which of these three - Hilton Waterfalls, Fayrous, or Sharm Dreams - is best recommended for the non-diver?

> Which of these three - Hilton Waterfalls, Fayrous, or Sharm Dreams - is best > recommended for the non-diver? I'd go for the Fayrouz - it's in the best location and since it was one of the first hotels in Naama Bay it has a huge plot. The accommodation is all 2-up 2-down and the gardens are spacious.
Also, it's not that far to walk to the Red Sea College!
If you stay at Ras Um Sid the shore diving is fairly limited (there's the dive by the lighthouse on the point, thats about it) and you'll find yourself getting minibussed in to the jetty at Naama Bay in the mornings.

I must admit I'm drawn a bit to the Fayrouz. For my non-diving wife, the facilities among the 3 I mentioned all seem v similar, but the Fayrouz has the advantage of a beach with good access, niot having to take a lift or many stairs to get to the bottom of the cliff. Also it's just a short walk (other side of Movenpik) to get to the restaurants and evening laze of coffee shops at Naama Bay itself. Sharm Dreams is of course across the main road from the Fayrouz, and Waterfalls is outside of Naama Bay so a taxi or courtesy bus required.
I tend to dive with Ocean College, and though the Waterfalls has a dive centre on-site, the Fayrouz is only a short walk to Ocean Bay - and it's only a hinderance twice, when first taking and finally collecting your kit to the centre.
Now I have to persuade her it's a good idea to accompany my son and I on this trip!

But extremely noisy, was there two weeks ago and out of six rooms booked two of us had to be moved because of the noise and one put up with it. I suspect, maybe wrongly because the Red Sea is now being marketed differently.

Divers are up early, dive all day, and are blinkin' knackered by 10pm and go to bed early in order to do it all again tomorrow. The non-divers OTOH get up late (Naama Bay shops don't open until 2pm!), sleep by the pool and then party until the rest of us are getting up again.
I for one am happy though to have lots and lots of non-divers on my 'plane. These rarely take up their full 20Kg akkowance, leaving plenty more for me - esp if they form part of the same party so we can share out our baggage allowance!

My Mrs. does not dive and loved the hotel, andthe snorkelling on house reef, it is built on terraces - pool on each terrace. Rooms were suites all with sea view.
The hotel is 5 mins from Naama bay by taxi - £1.50 (or £0.50 by sucide cabs) ... and simple to go in at night for a meal or drink, but because of being 5 mins away you avoid the noise & half of Russia that seems to go with Naama. I have seen teh hotesl right in middel of Naama bay and would have been pretty sick if I stayed there.
I dived twice last year in Sharm with a small dive set up .. no shop, just 2 Brits, they pick you up at Hotel .. normal day boat diving out of Travco, and return you to the Hotel later, good fun, personal service. Small group typically 4-6 divers ... much better than the hordes with some companies.
Elite Diving is the set up email me if you want the owners email address.
They can offer all the day boat diving, plus longer trips to Dunraven, Thistelgorm etc., and the full range of PADI courses.
I have been picking up a speciality with them on each trip.
Baz - 19 Feb 2007 12:53 GMT > Hello to all > [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > > Anyone got any thoughts on a decent hotel and dive school Hi Dave. We did the PADI classroom and pool work in the UK and then went to Sharm for our OW.
Have a look at me diving, first day OW dives. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4887705150492009104
We went Christmas 2005 and back in August 2006.
Both times we used Dive Africa http://www.diveafrica.com/, I dropped them an email before we went and they picked me up at the hotel. All of the dive operators pick you up.
And both time we stayed at Sonesta Beach, it has its own beach and only 10 mins walk to Namma Bay along the prom. http://www.sonesta.com/egypt_sharmresort/
Booked through http://www.thomson.co.uk/destinations/africa/egypt/egypt-red-sea/sharm-el-sheikh /hotels/sonesta-beach-resort.html?ito=1556&itc=97&referrer=google&gclid=CIyX37u6 uooCFR3IXgod6wojQQ

Some of the hotels are miles from anywhere.
Have Fun. Baz
Pete - 21 Feb 2007 10:55 GMT > In September were planning to go to Sharm. > > My Mrs wont be diving and I would just like to spend a 3 to 4 mornings > diving. This rules out the dayboats. The best shore diving you're likely to get will be at the Crowne Plaza. This is directly opposite Far Garden which is probably the best of the local sites. The dive shop there is Divers International. I've used them and they were OK. Crowne Plaza is a nice hotel.
Hyatt Regency is next door and twice the price. Very very nice hotel.
You'll soon get bored with diving in the bay, it's mostly sand and you have to dodge the boats. If you want to do this Red Sea College has it's own stretch of beach in the bay.
