Hi .. a colleague in work wants to start diving, recommended that he
does a try dive, then if he likes it a PADI OW referral course.
I would tag along on the 2nd part and get some dives in at same time.
Not being familiar with Dive Training locations up t'North can you
recommend somewhere he (and his son) can go to carry out this.
He lives in Pontefract, but anywhere within the M1, M18, M62 triangle
of Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster would be no problem, or I guess an hours
drive in any direction.

I can recommend Divemaster Scuba.
They train at 3 venues, one of which is the Ponds Forge Pool at
Sheffield.

Hi i can thoroughly recommend Orbit Divers
They are based in Wakefield and do a lot of training at the Blue Lagoon at
Knotingley (only 5mins from Pontefract) so should fit the bill very nicely,
When he is qualified i would be up for budding for a few dives!

Why PADI necessarily? What about SAA or BSAC?

Why ? ... it's my reccomendation to him.
He wants to take up diving with minimum amount of fuss & theory to get
the position to be able to dive safely when overseas on holiday - he
has no interest in UK diving.
PADI is the most Globally recognised system for sport/recreational
diving.
I was BSAC diver in 70's and when I returned to diving 5 years ago,
went the PADI route ... it does provide simple progressive route to
safe sport diving.

Just a note that you won't be allowed to 'tag along'.
Padi standards do not allow for non-students to be part of a group of
students doing their OW (for health and safety reasons).

You misunderstood ... I did not intend to take part in his OW
dives ... what I intend is tagging along on the dice trip to warmer
climates ... I'll go do my own dives with my dive buddy while he & his
son do their referral dives.

Ah, much nicer than watching someone wallowing along anyway ;-)
