Can anyone confirm that if you are going to Sharm El Sheikh for up 7 days
you do not have to pay for a visa? your passport is stamped for free?

As long as you do not plan to leave Sharm by land or *sea*[1] then yes.

[1] The distance allowed by sea will be provided by some one who knows.

You need a visa for diving at Ras Mohamed.

NOTHING in Egypt is for free [apart from the screaming squitters, should
you be unfortunate to suffer same].
We always buy a visa at the Airport as we go out to Ras Mohamed. Price
varies as to how flushed you
look, but is around £10 or so. Do not expect to pay in Gypo pounds as
they do not want it. Pay in Sterling or Dollars.  You can usually
negotiate a discount if you buy a few, we always do.  Last time we even
got change without asking; as rare as a smile form an Emperor Divers
guide [apart from on the last day, obviously]

Unless you plan to stay inside your hotel for a week, pay. It's just £10.
Without it you can't leave the city, and the police DO check. Not often, it
is random, but they DO check.

You have NOT seen a "jobsworth" until you've met an Egyptian policeman!

In the total cost of a holiday, £10 isn't much and it gives you lots of
options.

From my experience if you tell the visa desk that you want "Sinai Only" they
will mark your entry card accordingly. Then the passport control desk just
stamp your passport without charge. You won't be confined to quarters but
you won't be able to visit any national parks like Ras Mohammad either by
road  or by boat.

I have dived round the Tiran sites, Gordon, Jackson Etc. without a visa and
without any problems entirely legally, but you still MUST carry your
passport even for a day boat dive.

When I go with my family at Christmas I often go "Sinai only" and have been
happy to just do local dives. If you want to see the Thisltegorm (not
recommended on a day boat!) you will need the visa. The liveaboards won't
let you on board without the visa. The coastguard do spot checks at sea and
the captain could loose his license for carrying naughty customers.

It's entirely down to your requirements. Good tip though, u can get the visa
for
15 US  Dollars which is only about 7or 8 pounds sterling.

It might be worth buying a visa anyway because other wise you could find you
have restricted your options once you get to your resort.
