A long shot I know, but.......

I made the mistake of removing a memory card with the camera switched on and
it's sulking now. It won't start up, just displays the power light and a
blank display, but if I plug it into any USB socket, even just a powered hub
without the computer attached, it will start up just fine and continue to
work normally after I unplug it. But again, it won't restart on its own. I
don't think that there is much wrong with it as it works.

Any suggestions.

Take the batteries out, leave it for a bit, put the batteries (or better
yet  a fresh set) back in. That might reset the electronics.
