I know there is a lot of comments about news items being published on here
but I just found this article and wondered if anyone has seen it.  They say
this outfall pipe runs 24/7 like in the pictures and was wondering if anyone
has seen anything like this in the UK.

I may be mistaken in my interpretation of what I saw some years ago. At the
north end of a beach in Fuengirola on the Costa del Concrete, a sewage pipe
discharging onto the SAND from where the stink formed its own little river
into the sea, while the beach in question was but a few hundred yards away
flying a blue flag.

I went to Fuengirola and will never go there again.  It was my only Spanish
holiday and it will be my last.

Don't post it here, mail it to the Miami Dade County, Broward County and
Palm Beach County tourism departments.  Believe it or not, your money speaks
louder than anything I, a native of the area can say or do.

do you know their emails?  I tried googling "Miami Dade county tourim
department" and the closest I got was a tax page... do they really
want to fleece the tourist that much?

I had much the same problem you did.  I have a few contacts you might try
and will see if I can get something better.

In Florida, county governments are controlled by a Mayor and a Board of
County Commissioners.  For Miami Dade County, the list of Commissioners and
their e-mail addresses is at  http://www.miamidade.gov/commiss/emaillist.asp

For Broward County, the list is at http://www.broward.org/countygov.htm

Palm Beach County has a general contact address at
public@co.palm-beach.fl.us

Perhaps better contacts are with the state and federal agencies.  Here's
what I have for them:
Lizbeth.childs@dep.state.fl.us
Bernard.Appleman@dep.state.fl.us

I'll see if I can get you something better.  There's a group called
Palm Beach County Reef Rescue that is actively working to get the Delray
Beach outfall shut down or moved.  Delray Beach is in Palm Beach County,
about a mile closer to shore than their original permit called for.  It's
pollution flows north, directly onto one of the area's nicest reefs.  The
Delray Beach outfall permit has been up for renewal since sometime last
year.  Thanks to PBCRR's efforts, the permit has not been renewed and, with
a little luck, won't be without at least getting some additional
concessions, perhaps including development of an alternative disposal
method.  PBCRR's e-mail address is www.reef-rescue.org and the man behind
the effort is Ed Tichenor.  Of the three outfalls mentioned in the article
you guys saw, this is the one we're most likely to have a short term impact
on.

The Miami Dade outfall is a special problem, but one we've had little impact
on.  Once or twice a year, Miami Dade seems to have an accident, an accident
that dumps millions (literally) of gallons of untreated sewerage into near
shore waters.  Nothing is perfect and accidents sometimes happen, but the
frequency of accidents in Miami Dade seems more than a little suspicious to
me.

Florida's economy is diverse, the tourist industry, including Europe, is a
major segment of it.  Your comments are more likely to have a positive
impact than mine ever will.

I'll try to find better contact information for those that are interested.

I just don't think I will bother going.  I don't believe that a complaint
from a diver will make a difference with anyone in the US on any subject at
all.

You may not think you'll have an effect if you speak up, but you know you
won't have one if you keep silent.

Go, or don't as you please, but if you chose not to go, letting the
appropriate people know why you didn't might not only make a difference, it
might make a significant one.
