I use a Canon Powershot A620. I don't use the underwater scene mode. I
tend to turn the camera to TV (shutter speed priority) then use the
white balance to compensate for the underwater colour distortion, it
gives better results. This option was available to you on older cheaper
Canon cameras . Underwater scene mode has been around for a while too,
I think that the A95 had underwater scene mode.
The big big advantage of the Canon Powershot A620 over my old camera (A
Canon A80) is a much shorter time lag between pressing the button and
taking the photograph. Also the extra mega pixels allow me to crop and
enlarge without the photo being excessively grainy. Focussing: the
macro mode is pretty good, for nudibranchs etc...
The only disadvantage I can find is that the port on the Canon
underwater housing for Powershot A620 is not circular so attaching
external lenses to the housing may be a problem if you wanted to do
that (maybe to combine the camera's own macro mode with an additional
macro lens for ultra small stuff). The cover for the USB connector is a
bit flimsy too.
Interesting on Dave's comments on the A80 regarding sshutter lag. I have an
A85 & i've noticed there seems to be quite a delay in pressing the button to
the camera actually firing. Thats about the only gripe I have with the
camera. When I upgrade I'll go for another Canon with better resolution.
I've never actually used the setting for underwater ie the one with the fish
on it and wondered if it makes that much difference in uk waters?

I have a canon A620 and am very happy with it. I dive mostly around the Red
Sea and Oman and haven't used it around the UK.
I always use the underwater setting. Never have tried anything else. A photo
taken with the camera on the Thistlegorm won me a magnum of champagne in the
Sunday Times Travel Mag Smug shots comp!
A photo I took of a couple of largish cuttlefish in Oman persuaded an
American cousin of my wife to buy an A620. :-))
Taking the camera to Oz and the Pacific soon!!
