We are off to the red sea and I have heard mixed stories about being able to
eat the fruits and veggies. Any thoughts about this? Also would you know
what the water temp is now?

Thanks jamie

Ten days or so ago water temp was 26.

Be v careful about what you eat! Cooked food is ok. I am always careful with
salads and fruit. No ice cubes. Most of all DO NOT drink any water that
comes from a tap. Always buy bottled water and clean your teeth with same.
Drink loads a water otherwise you will dehydrate and get v ill!

Bottle water is v expensive in hotels. Go out and buy it in the small
supermarkets - v cheap there.
Have a nice holiday!

I don't buy the dehydration gives you upset stomachs line that holiday
reps/companies seem so fond of. Yes, dehydration is best avoided,
especially if diving, but Australia is one of the hottest, driest places
on earth. You need to drink plenty of water there, but do you get ill? Do
you hell, because food hygiene standards are high. I rarely have problems
in the Caribbean either, Asia on the other hand ...

I personally think the biggest culprit is hotel buffets where the food has
sat there for who knows how long even if you go when the meal first
starts. Just got back from 2 weeks in Mexico. No problems whatsoever and
we ate in a different place every night, but it was all ordered off the
menu, so cooked when we ordered it.

I'd avoid ice cream too except for the packaged variety.

There is nothing uniquely Egyptian about poor food hygiene.

That said I was fine on the Typhoon liveaboard for a week.

Fruits are okay if you rinse it with bottled water.

Ice cubes are no problem at all, most cities down there is living from
us tourist, so they don't want us to get sick.

Just dont drink tap water

True.

True.

The main reason for bad stomach is the money, yep it sounds funny, but i
am sure that in a single 50 piastre not there are more bacteria, then
fish in the red sea, the money is so filthy. If you touch it, dont
scratch near an eye, dont suck your fingers and stuff like that.

I have been on holiday in egypt 6 times, and work there as a diving
instructor for 6 month. Never had a bad stomach.

I must totally agree :)

Maybe I'm lucky but I've never suffered with stomach trouble
in all my trips to Egypt and the Red Sea. My rules are simple :
- Never drink the water unless it's bottled and you know the
bottled was sealed before you drank it. Money can be made
by topping up water bottles with tap water and occasionally
  I've come across this practice.
- Don't take ice in your drinks
- Wherever possible, drink beer from the bottle, not a glass
  washed in dirty water.
- Peel all fruit, or don't eat the skin.
- Only eat veggies that have been steamed or cooked in boiling
  water
- Make sure all food is well cooked.

Please remember to drink loads of bottled water when diving
to keep well hydrated ... and Have a great time !

regards

Avoid anything uncooked, dairy products, unboiled water.

Water temp throughout last week around Sharm 26ºC - T-shirt instead of a
wetsuit!

Food and drink excellent. Follow the sensible suggestions re tap water.
Avoid dehydration of course, but there's no need to get all evangelical
about it. Rather than drink lots of water (which replaces the water but not
the salts in sweat) drink fizzy stuff and fruit juice. Nothing magic - the
kidneys will hang on to what you want, and chuck the rest away.

Best way to know you're OK for hydration - look at your wee. If it's a
normal straw colour and not pungent smelling, you're OK. Drink when thirsty.
Over-hydration can make you sick too. Hear a dive guide recommned 8L
water/day. Surprised he didn't dissolve!
