Fuzzy - 10 Jun 2006 20:43 GMT I've ummm had a bit of an absence and wish to get back into it but gently :D more for the kits sake than my own, it's been hung up for about two years now. EEK
A buddy would be good too as Rob has buggered off with Digs :o)

:o) Gloucestershire, not that it matters, I'll travel to somewhere I like the sound of.. I've not dived for a couple of years and thought I'd better get back into it being as I have a wardrobe full of expensive dive kit sat doing nothing. :o( If I get a trip planned it'll spur me on to dig out the cyls from the back of the garage, get them tested and the regs, and I suppose sort out a quick pool session to test it..... Otherwise I'll never get off my a.s and doing anything about it.
This newsgroup seems dead compared to a few years ago, and none of my old friends sites are showing trips pending. Did yellow box fever kill everyone off or something??

Andy Cox - 21 Jun 2006 08:55 GMT Hi Fuzz,
Hope all is well.
I still dive OC, albeit occasionally (diving altogether that is). Like you, the kit has been unused for a while. A recent sort out has identified the need for a new zip and seals on the drysuit (Otter want £200), new batteries for both computers (don't want to begin to guess what that will cost) and testing of twins, singles and stages.
In addition, our compressor needs a new 4th stage, which although relatively cheap was ordered 8 weeks back and is still not in the country. Of course once you have your own source of fills, the cylinder testing requirements become a bit less black and white [lights touch-paper and stands well back].
I did have a snorkel the other day and aside from a fair bit of wild life was amazed to find a £10 note floating over the sand in about 6m of water. This is the second excursion to actually have a negative cost, the first being 4-5 years back on UKRS Plymouth where I earned £20 hacking some rope from a fishing boat prop just off of Bovi...
I think if I ever get serious about diving again, I'll probably go the YBOD route. I wasn't far from doing Trimix when I stopped doing the more techie stuff and think doing mod1 then mod2 is probably a more direct route than building experience back up on OC. Probably won't happen this year though. Most of my time at the moment is soaked up in sea rowing.

> Andy Cox Ahh, one of the old crew :o) Ello mate, good to see at least one of you is still around... and getting wet. All is pretty good (apart from the lack of water). What's Meese, Rob, Digs, Steve and even your then good lady Jasmine up to thses days?
Hope it all goes to plan anyway.
Christ.. I just noticed your mail addy...How long is your bloody course. lol

Jason - 21 Jun 2006 22:25 GMT > All is pretty good (apart from the lack of water). What's Meese, Rob, > Digs, Steve and even your then good lady Jasmine up to thses days? Meese is busy working, which probably gives me ample opportunity to insult him :) We just got back from Mexico. Did full cave over there. Nice dives.
I've got loads of spaces left over August Bank Holiday out of Weymouth. Not sure 35m counts as shallow, though guess we could do 30m on the first day or two. St Dunstan or the Skye, or both. Anyone else interested?

Mexico sounds nice... however caves do not. ;o) I remember you were always the one who had "just come back" from some far flung corner of the globe. lol

Anyone else interested? 30m lol Not what I'd call a refresher course is it. Although I was never one to be worried by my surroundings / vis / depth I'd rather "build back up to that" if you know what I mean.

And this may sound weird, but I'm seriously missing feeling my way round a decent wreck in the green darkness. but hopefully the upcoming trip to Truk will assuage the worst rusty metal cravings...

Jason - 24 Jun 2006 12:41 GMT > what the hell you doing in aussie when the rainbow warrier, Waikato, > Tui and others are over here in NZ, not to mention the Poor Knights > Islands :D I did the Rainbow Warrior in January. Nice enough, but way, way over hyped. Saw it described as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world. It's a trawler. 2nd dive was rubbish, reminiscent of those Plymouth kelp dives I don't do anymore.
Poor Knights were good though.

Yep, terrible viz, cold water... if only it had rough seas and strong currents the ML would be just like home! ;-)

> Hey, I'd love to, it would be great to catch up with everyone again, but > I'm still in Sydney. ;-) Oh well, I suppose someone has to live there. I was over in Xmas and will be again this year, but won't be venturing south into NSW. We do have the HMAS Brisbane up that way, which I did last year, and it's a nice dive if a little sparse at the moment.

La la la la la la la la, can't hear you. Go to Vanuatu, it's only a 3 hours flight. Cheap when you get there too.

Going to Gansbaai? Plan? What's that? I've got 2.5 weeks to go from Jo'burg to Cape Town. Going to hire a car, so anything's a goer frankly.
Have you got an appalling Aussie accent yet?
I could take being accused of being an Aussie in NZ (just) but the final insult was when a load of Aussie backpackers in Chile thought I was one of them :(

St Dunstan or the Skye, or both. Anyone else interested? I might be. It looks like I won't be spending most of the summer out the country as I was last year. Well, I'm off to Munich tomorrow for a while, then a week in Israel, then San Francisco the last week of July, but so far late August is clear...

But I agree with your earlier comment that the NG is dead compared with what it used to be like. Yes I'm one of those that bought a yellow box.

Andy Cox - 22 Jun 2006 09:45 GMT > What's Meese, Rob, Digs, Steve and even your then good lady Jasmine up to > thses days? Kind of lost touch with the others. Jasmine and I bought a house together a few years back and have been engaged for 3 years or so. We'll probably do the indecent deed one of these days, but no rush. She's done about as much diving as me of late, although has done a sea-search course and needs to put it into practice for her PhD.
> Christ.. I just noticed your mail addy...How long is your bloody course. > lol Not that long! I graduated in '02, worked in IT support in the local council for 3 years and then used my trade union ties to defect to a job as a HR-Nazi running a job evaluation project... That was well and good until UWA came along last October with an indecent offer to come and do the same thing for them. So back where I started. Kind of sounds like the bit with the mounty from Due South when laid out like that...
OT, but here are some of our latest exploits: www.andsl.org/rowing
If you fancy a shallow trip later in the summer let me know. We find ourselves in Pembs quite a lot of late, so there could be potential for a bit of shore diving whilst there. Saturdays particularly, as most of our rowing races tend to take place on a Sunday.

That sounds so wrong but it's late and I'm not re-wording it. :o)

rich - 22 Jun 2006 20:37 GMT ullo stranger... I've done over 40 dives this year alone (half in caves, half red sea) - Due in main to the wonders of actually having to earn my money, rather than just turn up and collect it :( Hopefully there'll be some nice clear water when I hit the UK waters on Trimix in a week or two :o and maybe all my broken kit will start working again? (oh.. and I have a new drysuit now! shock!)
Be good to catch up with you in the waters again.. you were pretty good to dive with, if I recall correctly :)

Good to hear from you, hope you haven't wrapped that 350 up...

Andy Cox - 22 Jun 2006 10:46 GMT >> I did have a snorkel > > what's one of those Andy ;-) Desperate isn't it! I did drag the twins along too, but was a bit worried about the tidal state. I also guess making the first dive of the year a solo-dive would be a tad on the stupid side even by my standards.
> Yes using my snips as I recall, I never did get a lenders fee for that. Well remembered! In hindsight, we should have let them drift a little more perilously closer to Bovi and then negotiated a fee...

Rudy Lacchin - 21 Jun 2006 22:49 GMT > I've not dived for a couple of years and thought I'd better get back into > it being as I have a wardrobe full of expensive dive kit sat doing > nothing. :o( Hi Andy - long time no hear from you! I'm going to arrange a few trips with a couple of Gloucester/Cheltenham/Stroud types as soon as I get back from holiday (late July). Might do a bit of shore diving, get a boat, tag along on someone else's trip - hoo nose?
Drop me a line if you're interested in being kept informed.
