Runnymede Dive - what happened?

I dropped in on my way back from work - gone!

These were the Good Guys - far friendlier and less cliquey than many other
shops in this part of SW London, better range of gear and services.

Just a note on the door, to say that internet shopping had done for them - I
think that if this is the case, we should all be worried.

Best wishes to Steve and the crew for the future - I hope something comes
together

They went sometime mid-November, financial problems I heard.
Reading Dive, which was part of Runnymede, went a while back
too.

I can think of at least 5 dive shops in the SE that've gone
under in the last 3 years. Maybe this is good news for BSAC,
as only clubs with compressors will be pumping gas soon...

I thought they'd consolidated the Reading operation into the Egham shop.

How will this affect the PADI business model, that (as I understand it)
requires a larger operation to have
a shop on-site if they want to progress beyond simple single instructor?

This is going to put off inland instructors from expanding, unless PADI
changes the requirements -
this can't be good news for any of us.

Sadly if you base your business on retail this will be a problem. I'm
afraid I'm not going to pay list for something when I can get the
same thing for a hundred quid less and I don't need the support.

There are advantages to being an inland shop in that you have
customers in a 360 degree locality but a coastal shop does get
people standing in front of all their displays waiting for fills, not to
mention the breakages business.

OK not everybody has a compressor but I do and my club does.

But yes, sad, as has been said these were some of the good guys.

Can anyone recommend a alternative dive shop nearby that does nitrox ?

A search on yellow pages shows nearby dive shops in Ashford and Slough.

I have been going to Runnymede Dive for almost 10 years and was
surprised by there departure but I can't help think that the shop was
overstaffed for the number of customers that were in there. It was
quite normal to be only customer in there with 3 or 4 members of staff
around. Their prices seamed expensive compared to other dive shops like
Mike's Waterfront Warehouse and most customers seamed to go there only
for fills and equipment service but you are right they were good guys.

The staff were probably unpaid trainee divemaster/instructor candidates
helping out, with perhaps only the owner taking a wage.
Economies of a dive shop in the UK are pretty much hopeless, I read the
other day that one of the better performing PADI shops only did 120 open
water students last year, which at say £300 a head is only £36,000.
By the time you take overheads of shop rent, vans, equipment renewal,
etc out of that there's not much left over for wages.
On the equipment side, there is zero chance of getting kit on account
(due to the number of shops going bust) so it all has to be paid for up
front with little in the way of discounts available (since the owner
can't afford to buy in bulk), the internet suppliers don't have to hold
stock - just take the orders and then purchase enough to meet the orders
once a week.
Hate to say, but buying off the internet IS really shortsighted, the
shops will all close and the clubs and individuals that rely on them for
air and a meeting point, will all suffer.

Nearest one I use Is Mike's Waterfront Warehouse in Chiswick.

I've used both regularly in the past, choosing one over the other only
based on gas requirements on the day.

I don't know any others in the area, so would be keen to hear of more
(You never know what that other shop will be useful for that extra
gadget or fill?).

Try Slough Scuba , there details are on the UKRS links page. I have always
found them to be friendly and helpful.
