Hi,
We are booked on a Liveaboard, (Asmaa, from Marsa Alam - St. Johns), on
Thursday, and my other half is having problems equalizing. Looks like
congestion in the E. Tubes, and she has tried all kinds of things to
clear them, including steroids.
We are going to have a last ditch attempt at gentle clearing in the pool
tonight, but she is worried about being stuck on a boat, unable to dive,
with everyone else talking about their fabulous dives.
Would you go??

I feel for you, but it seems like a pretty personal decision, since you
may not have enough time to find someone to take your place or get a
refund.
FWIW, I would go, hope for improvement in your partner's ear clearing,
but prepare for worst case scenario of enjoying a boat ride in a
beautiful setting if unable to dive.
Is it worth a second medical opinion?
Good luck.

Sure. she's nothing to me.
Sorry, I just could not resist. If you've already tried Sudafed or an
equivalent decongestant, probably not. I agree with her. I can't imagine
anything worse than sitting out dive after wonderful dive aboard a boat at
sea.

More than that - even seen an ENT specialist who prescribed steroids to
reduce any inflammation - they just made her high <g>

You have of course tried Sudafed?
If you are insured & can get a doctors letter recommending against diving
and specifying that this not a pre-existing condition I would be inclined
to cancel and re-book when the problem clears.
I hope you were lucky last night!

Sorry to hear that. We all look forward to dive trips and it's a shame when
one needs to be canceled. On the other hand, it does help insure that there
will another chance for the trip.

not an answer to your quandry, but something else to try....
take a straight sided cup and cover the base with a layer of table salt.
fill the cup to the brim with warm water and stir. top up as necessary.
snort the resultant saline up each nostril in turn and blow back out again.
sounds painful - it's not. far from it.
sceptical? it worked for me last year in the southern egyptian red sea when
i contracted a cold from my dearly beloved. only missed 1 days diving (which
was more than enough!) due to blocked e-tubes. i'd been on all manner of
decongestants, but this method had the ears cleared in minutes.ok, it may
have been a culmination of all the treatments but this was the golden
ticket.

Not sure I can even suggest this to her - I'd probably get a black eye

ah yes, but think of what you would get if it worked for her as well as it
did for me ;-)
