Dear All,
I was unfortunate enough to perforate my eardrum recently. Quite an
interesting experience as there wasn't much pain at the time and I
didn't force clearing, and it happened at about 30 metres (I thought
most problems happened in the first 10 metres or so). I never had had
trouble with ears before, and this was about my 120th dive.
Anyway, saw my GP and got the usual instructions - no diving for 6
weeks etc and come back and see him. So far so good.
Now I was in my local dive shop recently and got talking to the guy
behind the counter who said that once you've had it you become prone to
the condition. He himself has done it 7 times ! This spooked me to say
the least, and I've searched around but I have not come across any
evidence that this is the case.
Can anyone comment on this ?
Jon.

You bet.
Don't get your medical advice from guy behind the counter at a dive shop.
Get it from a specialist with diving knowledge. A call to DAN should put
you on the right track.

A guy in our club (former police diver) has perforated his eardrum 3
times. Or perhaps both of them, one twice.

I've perforated both eardrums. Once each. Both over 15 years ago and since
then have done many many dives without further incident.
But do listen to what the doc. says. The last thing you want is an inner
ear infection by going diving before it's fully healed up.

Mate of mine perforated his eardrum coming up from the Alisdair in
Strangford Lough after a "it's only a sniffle...". Went back diving too
soon, got an infection and was out of the water for nearly a year. Wait.
