I've got a Vyper sat next to a Quantum on my wrist.
From a spec point of view the Quantum does way more than the Vyper.
However:
1. Early units had reliability problems (OK now though and Apeks are
very good about replacements)
2. The strap is too short for a drysuit
3. The PPO2 level alarm is not adjustable from 1.4 (although mix 2
does 1.6)
Personally I would go with a Quantum as long as you get a later one.
As for the Suunto:
1. Menu selection can be a PITA
2. Setting the nitrox mix takes longer
3. Download kit is cheap (especially a homemade one)
4. Only does 1 mix

Think it must have been a batch in the middle, because I must have had one
of the first ones and no problems whatsoever.
Echo what you say, particularly about the ppO2 1.4 limit which is a bit of
a pain. It's also very easy to change settings on it. Takes about 5
seconds to set the gas etc.

Never having dived with a computer before I was faced by the same choice a
few months ago. I went for the Quantum and have been very pleased with it,
even though I do not at the moment intend to use the second gas setting or
even enter the realms of deco diving. Nice easy to read screens and even a
dimwit like me managed to get the hang of the settings and modes within
about half an hour. Very easy to set up before diving.
I didn't like the strap either so I drilled holes in both pieces of the
strap as close to the computer as I could get. I then threaded a length of
thin bungee through this, which is tied to give a snug loop around my
drysuit wrist. If the strap should come undone or one side of it fail I
should still be left with the computer attached to my wrist. It also makes
the thing easier to put on if you are bobbing about in a boat.
Cheers,
M
