So I have heard there is a "fitness test" as part of the HSE dive med?
Anyone know what it involve? and what the required standard (vo2max equiv)
is?

The fitness part of the medical is usually a step test - up/down/up/down etc.
However a full HSE medical can be fun with the ECG, hearing tests,
chest x-ray, spirometry...
I'm actually glad of the HSE medical hearing tests as I wanted to get
properly checked after a middle ear infection and my HSE medical was
actually cheaper than getting the same level of check-up done without
having to wait for the NHS...

The fitness test is usually some form of step test for 5 minutes, but it
could be another form of exercise, such as cycling, treadmill or swimming.
In previous medicals, I have had single step-ups, double step-ups and
squats. They monitor your pulse during recovery and, in the first
examination, do a post-exercise electrocardiogram. They may also check peak
expiratory flow rate at intervals after exercise.
Check out "MA 1 - The medical examination and assessment of divers (guidance
notes)" on the HSE's web site:
