Hi all,
Can anyone help me with the following problem, I have just purchased a sony
vaio laptop which has no serial port, before i bought the laptop i checked
on the net and found various posts telling me that the suunto computer
interface could be connected to a non serial ported laptop with the use of a
usb to serial adapter cable, i have now also purchased via ebay the usn to
serial adapter cable and installed it and the driver it was supplied with i
can find the adapter in device manager and it has been assigned com port 1
however i cannot get the dive manager software to find the pc interface
anyone any ideas or solutions ??
Regards
Mark

You could try changing com ports.  However, not all USB-Serial adaptors are
the same, and some just never work (the two i've tried I had absolutely no
luck with).  I've never found one to work with it yet (mine's home-made
which will be a slightly different circuit but it does work on low-powered
ports on laptops so no reason not to work through USB), but I know some do.
Best bet is to find someone for who it does work, and get the exact same
brand / model of USB adaptor.

Aye.

Check for any other listeners on COM1 - things like digital camera software,
mobile phone or PDA syncs, that kind of thing.  You will find them in the
system tray on the start bar at the right hand side.

Disable them and try again.

Also set the COM Delay in SDM to its maximum (50) - usually helps.

Have fun.

Hmmm... I'd be starting to suspect the USB-serial converter - I think I
remember some tales of some just not working.  Might be worth a trawl
through the archives?

Do you even know if the serial port works at all?
Personally I would look there considering ebay is hardly the most reliable
place in the world.

If it;s been detected as Com 1, it is basically working, and so is unlikley
to be malfunctioning- it will be functioning as it was designed to, which
unfortunately may not fully comply with Serial Port standards, may be low on
power, may not offer the correct emultion in drivers to fool SDM into
thinking it's real, or may not pass the data across the link correctly.
That's why i'd suggest finding a specific make / model that you know works
with an identical Suunto interface for someone else.

What version of SDM are you using?

Suunto have a new version (v2) available on their site - but only if you
look in the new D9 section. It works fine with my vytec, and is supposed to
have specific USB/serial adapter support (although I've only tried it with a
real serial port).

Don't know about the make, but I suppose some must work better than others.
I just bought a cheapy one from eBuyer and followed these instructions
exactly.  Worked on my Mosquito:--

Connect USB-RS232 Converter to USB port (without the Suunto interface
attached).
- Install drivers for the USB-RS232 Converter as per converter instructions.
- In Windows, go to :
o Control Panel
o System
o Device Manager
o Ports
Under ports you should see an entry for you USB-RS232 Converter.
This entry will have a COM Port number (e.g. COM5).
Right-click on this device and click on Properties.
Under properties go to the Port Settings Tab.
The Port Settings should be :
o 9600 Bits per second
o 8 Data bits
o No parity
o 1 Stop bit
o No Flow control
- Click on cancel and close the Device Manager and Control Panel.
- Start Suunto Dive Manager
- Click on Transfer
- Click on PC Interface Setup
- Select the COM Port associated with the USB-RS232 Converter (e.g. COM5).
- Click OK
- Connect the Suunto Interface to the USB-RS232 Converter.
- Connect your dive computer to the Suunto Interface and ensure it is in the
TR-PC mode.
- Click On Transfer
- Select your dive computer (e.g. Mosquito)
- Click on Start Transfer

Best regards

o Control Panel
o System
o Device Manager

- Click on Transfer
- Click on PC Interface Setup
- Select the COM Port associated with the USB-RS232 Converter (e.g. COM5).
