Good news for the Calypso

At last there seems to be good news for Cousteau's ship Calypso. Carnival
cruises has agreed to buy it from the Cousteau Society, after Loel Guinness,
actual owner, has regularised its donation to the society (the ship belonged
to Guinness' grandfather, THE Guinness, who has given it to Cousteau).
Carnival will refurbish it in the Bahamas and turn it into a scientific and
education center - whatever that means. All in all, it's good news for the
Calypso which had been rotting away in La Rochelle harbour for the past 6
years. There had been a campaign recently, by a number of divers, for it to
be sunk "honourably" before it just falls apart.

This is not the original Calypso. The original has allready
been sunk. Many many years ago.

Dunno what you mean by "original". The one I am talking about is the Calypso
which served as Cousteau's ship, which featured in Le Monde du Silence in
1956 and Le Monde sans Soleil in 1963, as well as in most of his other
documentaries and TV series. It was rammed by a barge in Singapore harbour
in 1996 and retired from service, but did not sink. Calypso II took over in
1998 but Calypso is still here - in La Rochelle harbour.

It might be more dignified as nice wreck somewhere, with fishes swimming
in and out.
One hesitates to think what "Carnival Cruises" will do to it.
The animatronic "Cousteau" experience and souvenir shoppe perhaps!!

I might be wrong!   No!  No now come on! I might be wrong
but I saw Cousteau's original ship the Calypso sunk by him himself
sometime around the 70s because he himself did not want the Calypso
to fall into the hands of anyone who he thought would not respect the ship
for what (he) thought it was. It was a second world war mine sweeper
and in the sixties it was becoming to expensive to keep afloat.

I don't know where I saw it but, and I know this goes against
popular opinion ;-} I think I may be wrong about it being the
original one. I was positive that I had seen a documentary on the
TV showing Cousteau sinking his Calypso. But after Googleing
I have found no reference to it. The only reference I found is per
what Greg has posted. Oh well I'll get me coat.

Think your both right.

The original Calypso WAS sunk in 1996 after an accident with a barge
in Singapore. She was lifted and transported to La Rochelle.

Yeah I have read that. But to give Guy his due he did mention that
accident in the harbour. What I was thinking was completely different
and obviously completely wrong. FX....Sigh.

Cheers taz.
