Myself and my boy are going to undertake a PADI Open water course, as
advised by some on this group ... we are going to do a referral course with
the theory & pool portion being undertaken locally.
We did some diving this year in Turkey and had intended in going back there
early next year to do the course - however the April school holidays for the
kids are a couple of weeks before Turkey opens for the season.
Any recommendations for a warm sunny overseas location for undertaking this
course .... it has to be warm and sunny as the rest of the family want a
basic beach holiday.
Don't want to do long haul for a weeks holiday ... so any suggestions for a
week in April?

Slight Problem with the beach :-)
Unless it's Mellihea Bay of course.
However for the 'family' type you might want to think about
somewhere that does the usual 'package' holiday then once you've booked
ask back here for recommendations from anyone who has been. That way you
know all the aminit amenat amine [1] err... activity / entertainment /
shopping facilities are in place and it's one less thing to worry about.
Kind of the Canaries / Costas / Majorca / Greek Islands stuff.

BTW: YOu are going to be *VERY* surprised by the amount of sea life
anywhere after Turkey. That bit of the Med has been fished to death.

Surely there's no better place for a diving course than the Egyptian Red
Sea?! If you're taking along non-divers then somewhere like Sharm El Sheik
might be your best bet...

Well as you have found the Med is still waking up from it's winter
slumbers, so I'd forget Cyprus, Malta, Majorca etc.
Go Canaries and for a family resort go Costa Teguise, Lanzarote
and Calipso Diving. www.calipso-diving.com
The resort has two white sand beaches and is very family orientated
with good hotels/apartments and restaurants.
But ..................... How old is your son? There is a minimum age
requirement which is nothing to do with any of the agencies.

I dived with this place that Kenny mentioned a couple of years ago and I
agree that they were a great team. Don't be put off by the fact that
they are a Spanish company, they both speak excellent English.

Still dont say how old your boy is?
Fuertuventura is the same admin area as Lanzarote and there are
age restictions, which can be waived by dodgy dive centers.
PADI may say yes, but Spanish law says no.
Wont stop you diving, but not good if insurance backup is needed as
you wont have any!

He is 14 so old enough to undertake the PADI course.

Yes but as other agencies take advice and lower ages it is
beginning to look like a minority view. 14 is generally
accepted, 12 is debated and 10 is considered a bridge to
far.

I feel that Larry "Harris" Taylor has a point of view that I agree with.
And though I am a PADI instructor my policy is that if prospective
students are not are legally able to drive a car, get married without
parental consent and drink. I will not train them to dive.

If you look around a bit, you'll find that he has a lot of views you can
agree with. He's always been one of the best sources of scuba information
around.

its nice to have a choice but in some countries drinking's is illegal.
My kids 12 -13 did two escorted dives this year on holiday. not sure how
much harm
two dives can cause but I would not want them diving every day. I could not
stand the stress. when they are older in their heads I will let them dive
but this age in their head is different for everybody.
I agree 10 is too young but no so convinced 18 is not too old.

I guess Lee will be able to correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand
that in certain US states you can get married and drive cars at 14,
but no booze until you are 21.

Sharm el Sheikh sounds like the place to go. My other half has been
twice this year, and I am going with her for 2 weeks in November.
We dived in Madeira in June, and she said that the Red Sea will "Blow My

Although it's a long way to go from the UK, and based on recent events you

You had to remind me? My hurricane shutters have been up for about a month
now. Living in a cave, which is what the inside of my house most resembles,
is not my style not to mention the bruises I've picked up bumping into
everything that used to be on my patio that is now in my living room, my
very dark living room.
Please, I'm over the storms. Enough already!

All done. I took the hurricane shutters off the patio doors and windows on
Sunday and will, one day at a time, take the rest of them down. The water
supplies will go down the drain and the gas supplies, for the generator,
will go into the cars. For the first time an more than a month, we're not
being threatened by hurricane . . . unless Lisa makes an unexpected turn to
the west.
While the wind is downright calm, it'll be a while before visibility gets
back to merely "wonderful."
