Anyone know if Apeks regulators have different brand / model names abroad?
Like for instance is the ATX50 known in the US as, I don't know, "ATX-Super"
or "Swordfish Pro" or some other peculiar local name, just like films have
different titles, cameras have different model numbers, and so on?

If everyone adopted my practice of deleting all but the relevant part of
messages to which they are replying then these newsgroups would be twice as
easy (and four times as interesting) to read

I don't own an Apeks, but I hear reference to the ATX50 from people here in
the States pretty regularly. To the best of my knowledge, the model numbers
here are the same as there.

Perhaps easier, but just think, I'd not have a chance to responde to this
portion of your message. No fun. No fun at all.

AFAIK Apex use the same model numbers worldwide. Certainly across all of
Europe and Australasia.
The only exception was, that until Apeks were bought-out by Aqualung a
couple of years ago, the TX50 and TX40 were re-badged by Zeagle in the US as
their own regulators (I.E. the TX50 was called the D50). I know this
because I bought a D50 second-hand a couple of years ago and it's identical
to my TX50s. The only difference was the stick-on badge on the purge
button on the 2nd stage.
One point of confusion is that many american divers use the slang term
'flathead' to describe the design of the TX100 and ATX100/200 1st stages,
but that is not their proper identification.

Oh OK. I've been looking on eBay hoping to get one from the US which, by
virtue of the exchange rate, would work out at just over half price.
There's hardly any that ever show up, and those that do are just either
first or second stage and you've got to mess around screwing the lot
together.

Probably not particularly clever.
Bear in mind that regs are heavy and will cost a lot to post - and that
they're going to get thrown around, and you could get charged duty/VAT.
Urgh.
Probably cheaper and easier to buy from the UK.

I agree, especially if you can get Apeks regs second-hand like I have done
several times.
If they are in acceptable external (minor scratches & scufingof chrome is
normal for general use) condition and breathe OK, teking the cost of a
service intio account, then I'd pay up to ?125 for a TX100 1st & 2nd stage,
or a little more if there was a TX40/50/100 as a secon 'octopus' 2nd stage
and a SPG attached.

FYI
The Diver's Warehouse is, or at least was very recently, doing some good
deals on Apeks Regs
ATX50 1st and 2nd stage; ATX40 Octo; Triple Console = £349 ( I got them
to throw in LP inflator hoses as well.
Try them at: http://www.diverswarehouse.co.uk/
I found them v helpful.

If you can't swap a few hoses around maybe your should consider a easier
sport, such as armchair athletics.
The reason why you won't see many Apeks for sale in the US is that the
popular regs there are mainly Scubapro (which I would not buy because of
their fiddly piston-ported 1st stage), Dacor (now owned by Mares), most are
of the old Dacor range which are becoming harder to get serviced and
Sherwood, which for many years had no UK distributor (although believe thet
one was appointed last year).
If you get a Zeagle T50D than thats the same as the Apeks TX50.
