Looking for a digital camera and housing and would like some suggestions on
where to buy, mainly on line.

Also any advice on which ones to go for. I'm no looking to spend a fortune.
I noticed one on a dive trip which seemed to be quite popular, I think it
was a sony ciberpix or something like that.

One other question, Do all digital cameras have a delay it taking pictures.
A friend has a optio camera and the delay can be quite anoying.

Cheers

Some digitals have no delay at all when you take the picture. But you
would have to pay dearly for that function.......

At the price range you seem to be suggesting you will have a delay.
This makes moving fish pictures difficult.

Most of the delay in most cameras are for the autofocus, the autowhite
balance and so on. By pressing the shutter halfway down (needing some
practice in a big housing with large glowes) you can minimice the
actuall shutter delay. But then you have to know where the fish is
going to show up.

I prucahsed mine off Ebay from an american dealer.  It was a cannon Ixus v4,
even after paying the tax it was a lot cheaper and is fuly compatible with
the European version.

the delay can be minimised by operating the camera, especially the focus,
manually. dslr's typically are very fast and suffer from virtually no delay,
however with housings in 4 figures they ain't cheap!

check out the prices on the "cameras underwater" website for cameras and
housings. by shopping around you should be able to get a more competitive
deal on the camera. the housings though are usually pretty static price
wise.
if you check out the forums on wetpixel.com that should give you an idea of
what's hot and what's not.

what is your price range?

i've just picked up a new oly 5060 and pt020 housing for ?570. used on one
dive so far to give it a shakedown and to see just which way i should be
operating the camera. waiting on a connector to use my flash from the
motormarine.

hope that's of some use.

Yes, he's a very helpful bloke too - I emailed him about using his adaptor
with my Olympus 8080w and he was more than helpful!

I would echo that- I use a housed Nikon 5000, which is a good camera,
but does have a "shutter lag". I can reduce this to pretty much zero
lag by half pressing the shutter, so that the camera focuses. It's a
question of composing, half-pressing and then waiting for the moment
to zap. Quite pleased with the results I have obtained this way.

Another UK on-line retailer to try are marine-cameras.com, who have a

Heh.. Alan James in Bristol. I went into his shop 2 years ago and more
or less got chased out when I mentioned digital!

I see he's changed his tune now though.

If you really want to upset him, ask about B&W pictures.......

The DX3000 and DX3000g have the smallest shutter lag you'll find on a
compact camera (0.22 and 0.14 secs respectively).  But that is possible the
only thing going for them -- image quality is none too hot, build quality is
rather poor, and they only weigh in at 3MP.  The cameras are Ricoh ones
(RR30 and G3, respectively) housed in Sea &Sea housings.

I am a happy snapper underwater and have the DX3000 package and would like
to counter that opinion.

The shutter lag is as stated very low and as such I do not have any pictures
of fishy tails even using the autofocus.

I find the image quality fine for printing out up to A4 size shoots. Even my
partner who uses a Nikon F80 housed was impressed by the quality I got from
a 3.2 Megapixel camera. It does however depend on what you want to do with
the results I spose. I just want a memory that can be printed if required, I
am not a photographer and tend to point and shoot, I leave all the settings
on automatic. Although I always say I will learn to use it properly for the
next trip:-)

The best feature (next to shutter lag) in my opinion is however the Macro
right down to 1 cm and the image quality is at it's best here.

There are some firmware downloads for the camera to improve image quality I
cannot comment on effects as my camera has not been underwater since I
downloaded them.

The housing is a joy small, neat and all functions easily useable it also
has a very handy cover for the LCD screen meaning sunlight does not stop you
seeing what you are shooting..

follow the links for two of my last holiday shoots (Warning patience of a
siant or broadband required as the shots are 1.3 Mb each nothing has been
done to enhance them)

I can recomend Alan James whatever option you choose. Very helpful,
knowledgable and customer service second to none.

Nice pics! Gotta say, though, that although the contrast and colour is very
good, the amount of digital 'noise' in both images is awful!

Just goes to show that digital still has a *long* way to go before it even
gets close to a half decent enclosed SLR...

With everything "it depends" ... I think the photo above which has the blue
background is overexposed which isn't going to help CCD noise much (Was
the sea really that colour?)

But if all you want is some snapshots for memories on a web page then
so-what?

You aren't really comparing like for like either - a 3MB consumer digicam
vs. a good housed SLR? Not a very good coparison in reality.

But with a few minutes digital alchemy you can turn them into something
that is quite acceptable for a web page - eg.

http://www.drogon.net/u2.jpg

And if you have the money, then you can always go for a digital SLR in
a housing...

Pete - If you are reading this, got a housing for your new monster yet?

Absolutely correct. Will you guys please stop comparing low end
digitals and 35mm. Low end digitals are fine, but they are just that,
low end. They are the polaroids/instamatics of the camera world. Fine
for snapshots. A crappy lens with a poor resolution CCD behind it.

But if you move upmarket with say a Canon D1s, it blows away any of
the 35mm opposition (not medium or large format though). All the
discussed problems of shutter lag, resolution, noise, burst rate, etc
etc, just disappear. But the camera body alone is 4.5 kilo
pounds......

My current beast is a lowly Fuji S2 Pro. A mere 1.2 kilo pounds, body
only.

Photoshop CS is a marvelous thing...... And it works in Fuji RAW file
format.

The housing is due any time now. Six week special order from Seacam
via Paul Kay.

That's very impressive Gordon. Can you briefly descibe what you did to the
original pictures? Would I be able to do the same with Photoshop 5.0 LE?
