There's been much written recently about getting lost but
no real effort has been given to the actual mechanics of how you get
lost!

Obviously this is something you really should take a specialisation
in.  Mearly going round in circles and hoping you lose track of where
you are is not good enough. Serious thought needs to be given to the
actual act.

I myself* (and I've got Frank as a surface witness) successfully applied
the 'confuse North and South' method at Stoney at the beginning of the
year, leading to a surface swim back across the lake.

Dan Taylor I believe applies a similar methodology but slightly more
technical.

What methods do others employ in this arcane art?

* And I'll quite happily admit it!

In my case it doesn't seem to matter how much attention I *think* I've paid
to where I've been or the compass I can be completely confused by the end of
the dive (often without knowing). My last UK dive was on the Mulberry's
about 3 weeks ago, I signalled to my buddy that I was going to head back. I
then turned towards where I was sure the buoy was only to be pulled back and
pointed 180? from the direction I'd chosen. Sure enough with 20 metres there
was the chain.

Diving with the current at your side seems to do the trick for me.
