Dilemma - Inspiration

Kate Rowley - 06 Apr 2004 09:09 GMT Hello all,
At the moment I'm stuck in a dilemma that I don't really know how to sort out and wondered if anyone had any advice/experience.
I want to get a rebreather but can't afford a new one and know that there is a list of second hand ones. Trouble is I also know that you need to be booked on a course to get one. Now I'm stuck. Without knowing what's out there in terms of availability and quality of second hand units I have no idea if decent second hand units exist but I don't want to shell out for the course for the privilege of finding out that they aren't decent quality. In case anyone starts on the 'diving's an expensive sport so you should expect to buy new things' I'm actually after two units. What are the chances of getting hold of two decent second hand units to do the course with given that I have not privvy to any information on second hand units? Also, can someone recommend an instructor preferably near South Scotland/Staffordshire?
Cheers for any advice you can provide

Speak to Nicky Finn at Ambient Pressure Diving - 01326 563834. She's very helpful when it comes to all things to do with the Inspiration. In fact, I bought my 2nd hand rebreather from APD. She'll also have the up to date list of instructors.

Can you get factory refurb units? We did ring AP diving and were told that they didn't sell second hand units. If they do then this would be the preferred idea as I don't think I'd want to buy one sold as seen especially as I'd have little experience knowing if it was good or bad.
Thanks for the advice Kate

Inspirations are no different to any other diving life support equipment, I'd choose to get it factory serviced before I thought about using it. Also you need to be aware that with the imminent release of the Evolution and the new Inspiration v2 electronics, Ambient Pressure are going to be very very busy.... even if you were to order a new one, the turn around will be delayed.
There are two types of regs, Seaman Sub on the very first units and Apeks on the newer ones, these can be serviced at your LDS
The hoses, lungs etc - you'll need to clean - Buddy Clean is about 15.00
You should replace the cells regardless of what you've been told about them, thats UKP? 55.00 each, you want three to use and I'd suggest three spare.
You'll want CRP2 like batteries, Energiser are the factory recommendations but most people get Panasonics from MX2 http://www.mx2.com, and use them without too many issues, each unit requires two and you'll want two spare.
If you read and familiarise yourself with the manual http://www.apdiving.com/manual.htm at the back in appendix 9 you'll find the predive checks - get the old owner to pre-dive the unit, assuming it holds negative and positive pressure checks and calibrates ok there shouldn't be too much wrong with it.
Pay close attention to the handsets and head unit, the handsets in some of the older models cracked allowing water in - check the general condition and marking - ask to see the unit calibrate. Next look inside the head - it should be very clean and check the wiring on the molex connector to the galvanic cells, this is a crimped connection and is exposed to O2 and moisture - any black "verdigris" or shite :-) it needs to go to the factory to be serviced - depending on if / when this was last done, it could cost 60-70 or 250-300.
If the unit is anything other than standard - I'd avoid it. - If you are in any doubt call the factory with the serial numbers from the head and they can give you the history and tell you who they think the owner is.
I'm sure others can add some more.

Dave - 06 Apr 2004 19:33 GMT I trained with Aberdeen watersports, they have 2 Inspiration instructors, both very experienced. They have had a used unit from time to time,

If you want to travel a bit for the course (It's a weeks holiday) I would reccomend either Martin Robson from eau2 http://www.eau2.com/ or Gary Fox Dive action http://www.diveaction.co.uk/
I have no connection with either except that I have used both, gary for mod1 and martin for mod2. Have heard others with good reports from both.
Danny The box said windows 98 or better, so I installed Linux

Both top blokes. I'd gladly use their services again.

Gordon Henderson - 07 Apr 2004 08:42 GMT >Hello all, > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] >is a list of second hand ones. Trouble is I also know that you need to be >booked on a course to get one. Hi Kate,
As I'm sure you've read teh othe replies now, it is possible to get a 2nd hand unit if you want to. There is now a small trade in 2nd hand Inspirations - offten through Instructirs who are keeping their kit up to date and a few private individuals who just want a new unit. Drop me an email if you want me to post a message on the Inspiration list for you - I've done this a few times in the past with good results.
The manual is online at http://www.apdiving.com/manual.htm so feel free to read it. Theres also a list of instructors online, but just call the factory for an up-to date list. Nicky or Sarah will point you in the right direction for ones closes to you.
Inspirations aren't hard to service yourself, but the factory does offer full servicing if you prefer.
Things you need to ask about when you buy the unit: Old or new handsets - The older ones didn't have backlights, the newer ones do. Old or new case (Although I suspect that I'm one of the very few with old cases left - the new cases have been in production for 5 years now) Factory fitted ADV, Bob-o-matic or no ADV. Counterlung size. Not having met you, I don't know how tall you are, but unless you are 6' or over, it's unlikely you'll need large counterlungs....
Also ask how old the cells are, but be prepared to buy a new set of 3 before using it anyway. Make sure you get the cell holder removal tool.
Good luck and welcome to the yellow side!!!

Mary - 09 Apr 2004 15:16 GMT Gordon,
I'm in the same situation as Kate, so I've just read the advice with interest. I'd be grateful if you could add my name to the list as well. I've heard lots about this list, but what and where is it exactly?

It's a closed list I'm afraid administered by AP for owners of the box. It does tend to get the more interesting traffic as it is monitored by the factory and many of those who have done serious time on the unit.
It also gets many of the *for sale* ads as people know there will be no problem selling but nobody want a unit falling into in unntrained hands with danger of putting another one on the statistics.

The powers that be in the factory add people when they get informed of them being on a course. Not enough people get added to the list IMO, however.
As for looking for a 2nd-hand unit, let myself or one of the other regular yellow boxers know when you are actively looking for a unit and we'll post a 'wanted' message for you.

Just out of idle curiosity what sort of money are we talking for an average 2nd hand unit?
