Thinking about a diving trip to Belize within the next 1-2 months,
however some of what I read sounds discouraging.  Like, crime rate in
Belize City, distance to dive sites and general lack of accomodations.

Are there locations that are worthwhile?  Thinking about a 5-day trip
or so.

TIA.

Do you require something more than a small tent and a bucket latrine?
or are you going to drag a stupid hair dryer around?

All you do is land at Belize City and then immediately hop on  a puddle
jumper to Ambergris Caye.

5-15 minutes from shore out of San Pedro.

So many kinds of acco, it makes it hard to decide where to stay for some
people.

Absolutely!  You'll have a grand time.

That's the absolute minimum.  Every time I've gone I've stayed longer.  I
started out with 7 days and then 10 and then 18 and they 23, etc.

I dunno.  It can be a pretty rough crowd at Jet's.  Heck, even I committed a
crime, smoking a cigarette in the bathroom there at Jet's suggestion.

I stuck it out for 5 days and that was way too long.  But who needs to dwell
on the troubles of Belize when one is heading in just a week's time to a
real island paradise, home of the blue-footed boobies.

Jet's being in the airport at Belize City.  :^)

Good thing you didn't get arrested.

You stayed at the wrong place, you didn't venture out and explore, you
didn't try to dive with the operator I had recommended and worst of all, you
compounded all of your errors by going when the weather was absolutely
terrible.  Shame, shame, shame on you.

:^)  Try not to get into any bar fights or get arrested for sneaking smokes
in the bathroom.

I took your advice by staying in cheap accomodations.  Heck, they were free.
And I would have ventured out except that I was miles from town with killer
crocodiles guarding the road.  As for the weather, I went in the very
bestest month for good weather and still got screwed.  A hurricane in May?
Good grief!

Unlike dangerous places like Belize and Bonaire, I've heard Ecuador is a
real pushover.  A loud American like me will have no problem there and if
there is a problem I'll simply order another drink.

I didn't recommend that.

See, ya get what ya pay for.

Golf cart.
