Man, I just realized it's been 10 years since our last visit!  Not
counting a day on a cruise.  Anyways, we have a favorite restaurant
and I wonder if it's still there.  Is Pizza Reynaldo still around?  It
was on the far side of town, across the street from the water.  It had
a neat little courtyard and some great pizza.

Nope...Pizza Rolandi is gone...however there is a pizza joint in the same
location and it's not bad.

It's now called Guido's.  My understanding is that it's still the same
family, just a new name.  In any case Guido's is one of my favourite
restaurants on the island.

Jack is right, Pizza Rolandi is no more - at least in name.  The new
name is Guido's, it's the same place just north of the museum, and
though I don't count heads, the staff is all still there along with
everything else except the turtle (he/she has left the building).  I was
told the name change was decided because another pizza outfit on the
mainland started using the same name.  This is plausible because I've
seen the signs with the name, and though I've not dined under this sign,
I've been told by several reliable sources that the food sucks.  An
effort was made to convince the new place to not assume a relationship
where none existed, but to no avail.  So, Pizza Rolandi changed only
their name to Guido's (pronounced Gee-doze, not Gwee-doze).  As usual,
any taxi still knows the location.

If your group is big enough they will open for you on Sundays(with plenty
of advanced notice).
DrYak - 14 May 2004 03:23 GMT
I would second the recommendation of Especias.  It features Argentine
food and a very friendly staff.

There is a wood fired pizza place about 2 block east of the town square on
the northernmost town square "road".  It was awesome the last time we were
there.  (no time to pull up a map for the exact location!)

I just got back - inquired about Especias I was told it is closed -
however could have been a problem in translation.

As a suggestion, my wife and I ate at La Mission. on Calle 4 first block
off the main street. Near Pepe's

Excellent we had the grouper (twice) Less than $23 USd for the two of
us.  No drinks (damn) and generous portions.
DrYak - 21 May 2004 03:23 GMT
Why no drinks?  There seem to be two La Mission in Cozumel.  I take it
this was the one than hangs a grouper out front?

It is the La Mission that did hang the grouper out front - it has relocated.

Since I was diving in the morning and using Nitrox - I was limiting my
alcohol intake.  The reasons were - Nitrox seems to cause more dry mouth
with me - plus I was taking Allegra for allergies and sudafed 24 hours
to help with equalizing (from allergies)  - trying to stay better
hydrated - and just not pushing my limits.  I have been known to drink
too much at times - I just try to watch it while diving.

There are two La Mission.....

I assume this is the location that used to be next door to La Choza.
When I was there in February that one was closed, but the sign was
still there.

>There are two La Mission.....

In that case there are three.  This one downtown, one on 30th Ave a
couple blocks north of Jaurez which is more "native", and the fancy
one back on Jaurez around Calle 65.

Hi, Joe.  Sorry we didn't get to meet up down there last week. I kept
pretty busy with the diving and fishing.

I met the proprietor of Especias last Sunday at Casa Denis; he is the
son of one of the principals of CD.  It is open, but recently so, I
believe. I am looking at the card he gave me; the map on it shows it to
be on the SE corner of  Calle 5 Sur and 10 Av.

It sounded great; unfortunately, when I talked to the guy (he was
working at CD that night), it was Sunday night and our last night there.

Cheers,
Gordon in Austin

I can't help you.  It's been 19 years since I was there... and I
wasn't impressed with any of the restaurants.  :(

Why not, they wouldn't super-size it for an extra $.29?

I'd go to Cozumel just for the restaurants, but of course the diving isn't
bad either.  El Moro has long been a favorite, Capi Navegante has always
been decent for fresh seafood, Casa Denis has good Yucatan dishes, La Choza
is where I go for chiles rellenos, and I hear that La Cabana del Pescador is
THE place for lobster but I have not been.

La Cabana del Pescador was THE place for lobster 10 years ago.  I am
told by more recent visitors that nothing has changed.

Nice too see that some things remain constant, eh?  A couple of more places
recommended highly to me are the French Quarter and Pepe's Grill.  I forgot
to mention La Veranda -- good food last time we were there.

Our best find this time (May 12-24) was a little place off the beaten
path (near El Moro) called La Perlita.  They served up the best grilled
octopus I have ever eaten.
