> Planning on going in June..how's the diving? How's the weather?
Ya know, I dove DM in the early 80's and it was quite nice. Fishy, good
coral, clear water...no real operations to speak of, but good diving
nonetheless. Visited there for a beach vacation two years ago and made a few
dives while on-island and the reality is that the fish are gone and the
coral abused. I like DM for a cheap beach vacation but would not recommend
anyone go there for the diving.
If yours is a diving vacation and you have the possibility to cancel and go
elsewhere, I suggest you do that.

I know it's late for the June trip, but I have to agree with the negative
report here.
We dove a few sites from the resort we stayed at - Playa Somethingorother -
back in 1999, and most of the sites were pretty badly beaten up. Whether to
storm damage or pressure from local spearfisherman I don't know.
In defense of the DR, there had been a pretty bad hurrican not long before
our arrival there..so it's likely the reef damage was only temporary. FWIW,
my wife and I actually lived in Santo Domingo for about ten months while I
was working there between December 1998 and October 1999....but due to work
and child related complications, didn't get much diving in...the little bit
of diving we did was pretty dissappointing.
The high point of our trip? Sobering up our way-too-hung-over divemaster
[who'd been letting the boat driver supervise my wife and I and a couple-few
German tourists on our dives] by unexpectedly surfacing behind him as he
lounged on the gunwhale and yanking him into the water with us.
When he lost his sunglasses, he 'insisted' on buddy breathing with us down
to 50' to retrieve them. By the time we three got back on the boat, he felt
much better, and the tourists were shying away from us for the attempted
mutiny.
We finished the day by treating him and the crew to lunch and many-many rum
drinks. Nice finish to a day of mediocre dives.
