Planning a trip to Cayman Brac and wondering if anyone has anything to say one
way or another about differences between Brac Reef and Divi for diving, food and
general facilities.

Thanks.

It's been a while since I was there, but at the time, Divi was beginning to
get run down.  Deferred maintenance was catching up with them.  Ther bar was
interesting, but they're close enough that you can drink either place with
only a few minute walk.  The dive shop at Divi did not have as good a
selection, was more touristy in appearance, and had higher prices.

We had an all inclusive at Brac Reef, room, food, diving and drinks.  The
rooms were decent and clean, the food was plentiful and good and the diving
was spectacular.  As near as I can tell, Divi did the same sites on pretty
much the same schedule.  The one difference I noticed is that Brac Reef does
one day of diving on Little Cayman.  They take their customers to their
Little Cayman affiliate for the day, including lunch at the other hotel
while the Little Cayman resort takes theirs to Brac.  Nice touch.

My choice would be the same as it was last time, Brac Reef, but I know
others who have been going back to Divi year after year.  I suspect you
won't go far wrong either way.

BTW, there's no on site shore diving at either resort.  If you want to do
shore dives, take a cab (cheap enough) or rent a car.  Either operator can
tell you where to dive.

Thanks. That's helpful.

I've sometimes recommended to people to "flip a coin", as the
differences in facilities is often minor enough such that it depends on
who has most recently rennovated.

My general preferences in dive operations is for Divi, as I like their
boats better (a Goldylocks "Just Right"...not too big or too small).  It
also helps that I'm a repeat customer there (and a timeshare owner) and
I enjoy a level of dive freedom that Reef Divers doesn't generally allow
to anyone. I've dived with Reef Divers and they can be PITA stickers for
stupid stuff.

However, Divi's reportedly undergoing some rennovations to their
timeshares (finally!!!), which were disgustingly long overdue, which may
make them the noiser place to visit from now through December.

And more disturbingly, this past month (July), they had a screw-up where
they booked the resort to full capacity (~120 guests) but were short on
diveboats onhand, and could take only ~68 guests out diving at a time.
They were short two full boats, and it resulted in a lot of customers
being rightfully ticked off.

As such, when you call Divi's 800# to inquire about price/availability,
obviously, don't be rude to the person on the phone, but make sure that
they get the message that their customer base now knows about their
royal screw-up and you want to be sure its not going to happen on your
trip.  The simplest thing to do would be to ask how many rooms they
already have booked, and go to Brac Reef if they have more than 75
guests booked.

Finally, drop me an email offline with your proposed travel dates.
Depending how far out in the future you're thinking of going, I might be
on-island and we can hook up for some shore diving or something.
