Take a look at the "Undersea Explorer". We've been once on the boat and
the team was great, the cooking delicious. We got tons of information
about the ecosystem and all in all it was fun. They always have one
scientist on board who's making field work, and you get to help him/her
if you want.
You can make about 4 dives a day, one of them a night dive - if you feel
like it. They take good care of explaining you what you may find
underwater, and try to make it as secure as possible for you.
It's not cheap, but worth every dime. Only not if you are a beginner.
You should be a moderately good and experienced diver, as you'll have
more fun that way.
IIRC their website is <http://www.undersea-explorer.com>, and they are
based in Port Douglas.
We enjoyed ourselves and look back to diving with them again.

I believe the name of the boat is the Freedom. I've heard good stories about
this boat yet I have not been on it. Lawrence

Try Nimrod Explorer, as opposed to Undersea Explorer.......
Undersea is sold as a kinda "Research and Dive" boat......but Undersea
Explorer is a twin hull, not what i would call a catamarn, regular dive
boat, good cabins with ensuite.......food is good too, usually does
northern barrier reef and coral sea, (ribbon reefs).
We had a great time on board.
Any info on this or Spirit of Freedom see www.diversionoz.com
