Occidental Grand Cozumel vs Occidental Allegro vs everything else

My wife, a few friends, and I are planning a trip to Cozumel in late summer.
A google search hasn't helped much in finding the information I was looking
for.  We've managed to find a deal that would be about $1000 per person for
7 nights at an Occidental resort (Occidental Grand is $75 more per person)
including air out of Midland, TX.  I was wondering what opinions people here
had of these resorts and how they compared to other options.  Also, is $1000
per person a decent deal for the resort + air?

Also, my wife and I (and a friend or two) will be diving (a little).  In
that vein of thought, I had a few questions.  Is Dive Palancar a decent
operator?  What prices can I expect?  Do they allow shore diving (and would
it be worthwhile if they do)?  If Dive Palancar isn't worth the time / cost
/ whatever, can other operators pick us up at the resort?  Which other
operators would you recommend?

Finally, Are there any other tidbits of data you think I should be aware of
in regards to this trip?

I appreciate all the help I can get.

It seems to me that it would be a shame to go to Coz and stay in an all
inclusive place out in the sticks. Cozumel has much to offer in the way of
eating places and laid back things to do.

Any suggestions on better arrangements?  I'm (seriously) very eager to hear
them.

On advice from Bob Ling, I stayed at the Bahia when I was there.  The rooms
are nice enough, the prices are good and the hotel is well located.  It's
far enough from the center of town to allow sleep at night, but close enough
to walk to the nightlife.  It's across teh street from one of the dive boat
piers as well.

I assume Bob still visits the island frequently and is as up to date on
what's going on today as he was back when he and I were there together.
I've always found his advice on Coz to be pretty much on target.

stay at the Plaza Las Glorias and walk to town ...sample the many
restuarants..they're mostly all good .  Try some of the hole in the wall
type joints they're good too.
check out renting a house for a week ...some are affordable and nice. and
with several couples splitting the accomodations  they can be very
affordable.

Both the hotels that you mentioned are FAR AWAY from town. You'll spend at
least 20+ dollars going into town.

I spent two vacations at Plaza Las Glorias, it is a great hotel, nice staff,
and a short walk to town, and best of all it is right near a major
supermarket! This is where all the locals buy their goods. The rooms are
really big and roomy, and all the rooms have a Ocean View, also the hotel
has a dock that you can go snorkeling off of. The last time I was there they
had a barracuda living around the dock.

The dive shop at Plaza Las Glorias is OK, they have boats that leave right
from the dock at the hotel so you won't have to haul your gear very far, the
boats are really nice. I been at some dive shops at Coz and the boats look
like they were on their last leg, sorry I don't remember the dive shop
names.

The only problem I had with the dive shop at Plaza Las Glorias(Aqua Safari)
is they wouldn't rent me tanks since I didn't have a scuba buddy. I had to
go to a didn't shop to rent a tank.

You clipped Jack's post, and this was what Jack said:

> > stay at the Plaza Las Glorias and walk to town ...

You can walk to town on your HANDS (if you're in shape :-) in 10 minutes.
Walking on feet go much faster.

Knowing Jack, most of the time he CRAWLS (not the Australian crawl
either) in town, after boozing it up in street corners.  :-))

Your earlier comment about "you mentioned" 20+ cab ride must refer to
somebody else's post.

> I spent two vacations at Plaza Las Glorias, it is a great hotel, nice staff,

Yes, it's a Mexican version of a K-mart type SuperCenter.  Many locals
buy their goods AND food from there.  There are other supermarkets
like it elsewhere on the island.

Where else can you buy 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) of bananas for 1.9 pesos (about
20 cents)?  :-)  I grocery shop there EVERY time, to stock up the
refrigerator in the hotel on soft drinks, meats, fruits, etc.

BTW, from my hotel to that supermarket, it's about twice as far as
going to Senor Frog or Carlos 'n Charlies.   The cabbies at C$C
charges $4 USD (about 44 pesos) to go from there to my hotel (a
3 minute walk) because they posted a sign on cab fare for the "benefit"
for CRUISE PODS -- but leaving out the fineprint that the posted
price is the MAXIMUM any cabbie is allowed to charge anyone
legally, for the start/end locations.

Without the $4 (maximum posted), some cabbies would charge $10 or
$20 to ride a block or two.  But MOST Cozumel visitor don't know
this fact about the rate posted!  That its the MOST they are allowed
to charge.  When taking cabs in Coz, always name your fare (if you
know it), haggle if necessary, and don't get in until the fare is
agreed upon.

As a concrete example, from the supermatket in question (twice
as far to my hotel as from C&C (also known as Puerto Langosta)),
the cabbies would charge me 20 pesos (because that's what I offer
them -- slightly higher than what he would take the REAL loclas
for :-)).  Just learn to say 20 pesos in Spanish.  My Spanish
sucks!  But the locals definitely appreciate any EFFORT the
visitors show that they are trying to learn the local language.

The 24 or more pesos you save (compared to the Pier posted price
for half the distance) could pay for 12 kilos (26+ pounds) of
bananas that could make a monkey out of you.

Okay, the 1.9 peso per kilo price is not the "everyday" price.
But even at double that price (which is nearly everyday) you can
STILL turn into a monkey, and can then walk from Plaza Las
Glorias to town on your hands.

> The dive shop at Plaza Las Glorias is OK,

Nah.  It sucks!

> The only problem I had with the dive shop at Plaza Las Glorias(Aqua Safari)

True.  They don't dive below 80 feet, and they wouldn't let anyone dive
who has the slightest "medical condition".  I've had well over 1000
dives in Cozumel.  Scuba Du is the ONLY shop that ever refused to
let me dive because I checked in the form that I am a diabetic --
which is no longer a contraindication by any dive organization, and
at that time I already had well over 500 dives in Cozumel.

Their boat are "nice" (spaeious) if you like VERY SLOW boats that you
almost NEVER see Punta Sur, Columbia, Palancar Deep, Palancar Caves,
Palancar Bricks, etc., etc.  because in addition to taking forever
for their slow boats to get there, most of those dives at those
southernmost sites are best done with maximum depths BELOW 80 fsw!

That's the LEAST of the negatives about Scuba Du.

Words worth repeating, to ALL Cozumel visitors.

I believe that that's Punta Langosta, though I usually refer to it as
"Puta Langosta", my first pun in Espanol.

How was your trip?  Things get pretty tame around here when you're
gone... ;^)

Actually both are about the same place.  Punta Langosta is where
the Plaza is, and across the street is where Puerto Langosta (the
pier) starts.  Since I just came back from a cruise, I slipped up
and referred to that proximity as Puerta rather than Punta.

> How was your trip?

Which one?  ;)  The cruise with diving in Coz was excellent.  I
learned that the dive boat could let me off Puerto Langosta (the
pier part far from the street, closest to the cruiseship) without
any monetary bribe of the guard.   But at Puerto Maya (the pier
near the La Ceiba hotel), a $2 per person bribe was needed for
the guard.  It was well worth the bribe not to have to lug my
gear bag through the shops at the pier, let alone saving a 50
peso cab fare from downtown.

Really?  Then this place will be very tame the next three months
cuz I'll be gone about all but three weeks, including diving in
Coz on two trips, a few more islands in the French Polynesia,
the usual Cayman Islands liveaboard, and a first dives in Bali. ;*)

Only those corners where cheap beer is available...seems there's almost
nothing cheap in Coz these days. Mostly I rent a car or walk.  The Chedraui
usually has 6 or 7 avocados for a dollar...always worth the walk.

I was at the Allegro at Christmas.  Also checked out the Grand.  Both
were full... as for diving, can you say Mooooo?

Also both are "family" resorts.  Meaning lots of kids.

If you're going for the diving, suggest you stay downtown.

$1000 is about right if flying out of Midland (to DFW).  You should be
able to get cheaper (ck www.adventuretoursusa.com &
www.mltvacation.com for packages departing out of DFW) if you want to
make the drive.  Not sure about the diffference between locations.
Don't get a site by the pool if you want some quiet time.  Just was
there in November.

You will need a car to get the most out of the island.  I use the AI
for breakfast/lunch/drinks and get into town for dinner.  Might not be
the cheapest, but saves the hasle of looking for food & driving after
a few too many drinks.

Usually smart rental cars (google for web site) will have car
specials, but you'll need to email to get them (insurance included).

I use dive with Martin....plan on $60 per 2 tank dive with multiple
dives being cheaper.  Small boats, decent guides, dive till your tank
is empty (well,  ~500 psi).  Good thing about being so far south is
the boat ride is usually only 5-15 minutes.

I spent Christmas at Allegro.  Having been all over the Caribbean, I
must say I was disappointed.  The resort is beautiful, but in
operation it was very much third-world - power went out several times,
etc.  Plus the time share people drove me nuts.  While the rest of the
staff was nice, the dive op was very much cattle boat operation.
Also, as resorts go, this one is very family oriented (meaning lots of
kids).

I second the suggestion about Bob Ling and paying attention to his Coz
posts.  If you want to dive, stay downtown and use one of the fast
boats.  Eat out a lot.

On the plus side, the Occidental does have a nice beach - one of the
nicest on the island.

Ok now for really helpful advice.  here is a website where you can get
lots of info on hotels, dive ops, things to do etc.

http://www.travelnotes.cc/tchatters/viewforum.php?f=1

Get the Cozumel map from www.cancunmap.com so you can understand where
hotels are.   The best beachs are at Reef Club and south which
includes the hotels you discussed.

If you are willing to drive to DFW, you need to check the charters
that fly out of there and go to their websites to check prices and hot
deals/late minute deals, etc.

Summer may be a slow time with lots of mucho better deals that $1000 a
person.  However, I just checked the last minute deals at
www.atusa.com and Allegro was $880 not including taxes/fees which
would probably get it up to $1000 per person.  So assuming airfare per
person of $300 (as high as $600 from some places), that means $100 per
person per day for hotel and meals.  Probably a fair price.

Ypu can choose a dive op not associated with the hotel and have them
pick you up.

Late summer is sort of the rainy season, so carry a rain jacket.  Better
yet, rent a car and go to another part of the island.  It rarely seems to
rain everywhere on the island.

I've been to CZM nine times.  We stay 8-10 days at a time.  The first time
we stayed at El Presidente.  Great place but too far out.  Since then we
have stayed at Plaza Las Glorias every time.  The door man remembers us
every time.  Not every room is the same (including quality), but when we get
one we don't care for, they toss us keys to several rooms and tell us to
pick one.  Most dive operations will pick you up at the pier.  (And yes,
they do require you to have a buddy to get a tank of air at the hotel dive
shop.)

Chedraui's is directly across the street.   Think of it as a Mexican
Wal-Mart.

By all means, rent a car, get a cooler full of adult beverages and drive
south and hit the little beaches and private/public beaches.  There are lots
of palapa bars worth stopping for a drink (and food at some).   Paradise
Cafe, Punta Morena, Coconuts, Playa Bonita, Playa San Francisca, etc.

With so many good in town restaurants to eat at, I can't see staying at an
all inclusive.  You will miss all the atmosphere. We walk into town every
night for diner.  The walk is just enough to sober you up from happy hour
and make you hungry.  The reverse is true walking home at night from Carlos
and Charlies.

I'm sure I'll forget a lot of restaurants as I know where they are, but
simply forgot the names, but a few to check out are French Quarter, Primas,
Capi Navigante, los Dorados, Guido's Pizza,Casa Denis and then Rock-n Java
and Jeannie's Waffle House for breakfast.

Have a great time.  We do every time we go.
