Any recommendations for "must dive" spots?
Any shore dive information would also be appreciated.

Mark, I must have missed this, sorry....

What part of the island are you staying on?

Shore dives are really very convenient. They tend to be easier towards the west
end of hte island and a little more challenging the further east you go.

We will be staying at Habitat Curacao which, according to their web site, is
on the South West Coast.

Thanks for any insights you can offer,

I spent 10 days there in January of 2002. I liked it enough to return for
one day from a cruise in October of that year just to do 4 shore dives on
the house reef.

It is a very well run operation with good facilities and quite enjoyable
diving. The only downside is that it is a bit remote from the rest of the
attractions of the island.

But then again, what do I know?

Thanks Lou for the info.
Sounds as if the avid divers amongst us will be better pleased than those
that are going mostly for the night life.

Other than the house reef; are there any shore dives, in particular, that
you recommend?

Sorry, Mark, I liked the house reef so much I did that sometimes twice a
day! 2 tank in the morning, 2 tank in the afternoon from the boats, then
either a pre-dawn dive or a late night dive and one other dive from their
shore was enough for me. The water temp was a bit chilly for me, 77 F, so I
wound up renting a shorty from them. Bonaire is usually no lower than 79 F.

They had a deal there at the time that you could rent one of their trucks in
4 hour increments. I did that 3 times during my stay. Otherwise, I was
content with what the facility had to offer. Can't be much help to the party
people, I'm afraid.

It takes about 40 minutes to drive to town, but there are marked shore dives
within 15 minutes of Habitat if I recall properly. I found things a bit
lusher than Bonaire, maybe a little more pristine, so I don't think you can
go wrong striking out on your own.

IMHO, good choice.  We were in Habitat in June 2003, and it was
pretty great.  The house reefs is quite good, and you will come to dive
it many times no doubt.  Also not to be missed as an easy night-dive.
Habitat is about half way "up" the island.  AFAIK, there is no diving on
the north shore.

Mushroom forest is quite interesting.  Cas Abao was a bit poorer, but
has a nice beach.  We missed Reef St. Marie wihch is a unique (in
Curacao) double-reef -- very nice I hear.  Some divers complained about
the Superior Producer -- its well known, but they said there was little
to see and the current was so strong they cut their hands on the line
going up and down.

I have a short trip report available:
http://www.niksula.cs.hut.fi/~mdobruck/diving/curacao/curacao.html

BTW, the boats from Habitat only go about half way up the island
(northwest direction) counting from Habitat.  If you want to visit the
western tip, you will need to rent a car.  Its easy to find your way.
Buy the "Drive and Dive" map (6 USD), and watch out for red-painted
stones by the side of the road.  All sites are well marked.

Thanks very much for the information and the trip report.
Can't wait to get out of this snow and ice and off to balmy Curacao!
