We are taking our first trip to Belize in the end of April and staying
at Ramon's on Ambergris Caye.  Since this is our first trip, I'd love
to hear from anyone that has stayed at Ramon's and can give us their
opinion of the resort and what to do/dive (Blue Hole already
planned).  Thanks in advance for any help!

You're fortunate in that our number one Belize advisor here is on
vacation (in Belize, of course).  She doesn't care for Ramon's much,
having several places she'd recommend first.  Something about their
pool area not getting enough sun.  Aside from that, and the fact that
you could do a lot better price-wise, Ramon's has a good rep and their
house dive op is supposed to be good as well.  They are the number one
shop for large dive groups, so be forewarned if you're not part of a
large dive group.

You may want to repost this in another week or two to get the rest of
the dirt on Ambergris.

Greg, I may have once mentioned such a thing . . but somehow I doubt it.

Now that I have mentioned a great number of times.  There is much better
value to be found.

The ambiance of Ramon's grounds, beach, pool and bar area is hard to beat.
However, one doesn't have to stay at Ramon's to enjoy a drink there or to
use their dive op.  One can enjoy the ambiance of Ramon's whilst staying
elsewhere in significantly better quarters for the same or less dollars.

Further, some people that stay in the garden suites are distinctly unhappy.

Maybe the OP isn't patient enough, but I'm here if they have any more
questions.

Weird, I tried to find it on Google but I couldn't.  You must have
somehow deleted the archived posts so I can't prove a thing.  I hate
when that happens.

Anyway, I got part of it right.  And that's what you get for
vacationing so often.  If you would only stay around here and do your
Belize-advising job in the first person, I wouldn't have to put words
into your mouth.  (You'll note I didn't mention the wind)

Hasn't this Belize place heard of internet access?

One out of two ain't bad.

Maybe the dive op isn't supposed to be good, now that I've reviewed
your previous posts trying to find where you commented on the shady
pool area.  Oh well, one out of three isn't horrible, considering I'm
not getting paid for this.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

I'd be unhappy if I were staying in the garden suites.  Yeah.

Yeah, stop bugging me.  What do I know?  Next time I go to Belize, I'm
staying at Ramon's.

chilly:  In truth, the pool is partially shaded and not anywhere near as
large as it looks in the brochures.  Regardless, it is in a pretty setting
and has a cool layout.  As far as not being that large, most of the pools in
San Pedro are not much in size.

Anyway, I got part of it right.  And that's what you get for

stay around though it is rather curious to me that every time I go away,
there are posts asking questions about the very place(s) I'm visiting at
that point in time. Since you are in the mood to Google . . .I think you'll
find that this has happened a couple of times.

Hasn't this Belize place heard of internet access?

Reef-fish or Popeye?  I don't post when I'm on vacation.

Yeah, stop bugging me.  What do I know?  Next time I go to Belize, I'm
staying at Ramon's.

chilly:  Frankly my dear, had you stayed at Ramon's on your one and only
trip to San Pedro, you would have been much happier and had a much better
time overall.  For one thing, you'd have been able to eat lobster every
night, drink up at at least one funky bar and have gone diving on a decent
boat with a DM that knew what he/she was looking for.  Instead, you had PB&J
sandwiches and searched for Jesus in a dingy.  No wonder you aren't all that
enamoured of the island.  You haven't really experienced any of its charms,
windblown or not.  But then, we've had this conversation many many times
over the years.  :^)

If only everyone would just listen to me, then everyone would love San Pedro
the way I do.  Wait!!  Never mind, no one listen to me.  It has already
become hard enough for me to get the room I want when I want it.  And on top
of that, I wasn't able to dive with my favorite captain and DM every time
out because others had chartered them.  Grrr . .

I swear I somehow made the connection of shade and Ramon's through
you, whether it was here, e-mail, or phone, I dunno.  That part never
bothered me.  I get enough sun back home.

Yeah, you'd think that if it's so easy for me to Google, that others
could do it too and stop bugging everyone with more of the same
questions about Belize.  Of course now that r.s.l is down to about one
post a week, maybe that's not a good thing either.

> chilly:  Of course it has internet access but who do you think I am?

Yeah, who would ever think of doing such a thing.  I sure wish I could
have internet access on a liveaboard, though.  It would be nice to see
what Reef Fish and/or Popeye are saying about me while I'm on
vacation.

I already made it.  Don't expect perfection from those of us working
diligently to field all the Belize questions while you're out
carousing the nights away.  If a whole new slew of divers ends up at
Ramon's expecting to find a shady pool area and instead get lots of
sun, it's you who's to blame.  Maybe you can talk 'em into bananas
before they get too burnt.

> chilly:  Yes, *you* would definitely be unhappy in the garden suites.

You sometimes forget how flexible I can be when I feel like it.  I
recall you losing a particular bet over BIBR.  I might be happy there
just to spite you.

Lobster in May?  I thought that stuff was illegal.  And from what I
recall, the wind played at least a slight part in my misadventure.
Doesn't it always?

I barely even started getting to like Bonaire and it's already getting
too crowded.  I think that's a population issue, with PADI at least
partially to blame.  There's only so much diveable accessible coral
reef, with global warming and other factors killing off more every
day, meanwhile more and more divers are getting certified.  The longer
we fly to more exotic destinations, the more we're warming up the seas
and killing off the coral.  It's not going to be getting any better in
our lifetime, that's for sure.

factor.

find it curious that often enough, the questions come while I'm at the
destination instead of at my computer.

I already made it.  Don't expect perfection from those of us working
diligently to field all the Belize questions while you're out

chilly:  I don't expect perfection from most, but you are in a different
category than most.

If a whole new slew of divers ends up at
Ramon's expecting to find a shady pool area and instead get lots of
sun, it's you who's to blame.  Maybe you can talk 'em into bananas
before they get too burnt.

chilly:  They should google to find out whether or not they need bananas.

You sometimes forget how flexible I can be when I feel like it.  I
recall you losing a particular bet over BIBR.  I might be happy there
just to spite you.

chilly:  True enough.  However, I maintain that you would like the island
better on the whole if you'd stayed at Luna Beach.

Lobster in May?  I thought that stuff was illegal.

chilly:  Oops.  Quite correct, no lobster in May.

And from what I
recall, the wind played at least a slight part in my misadventure.
Doesn't it always?

chilly:  It is a windy area.  But sometimes it is just a nice breeze.  And
frankly, it's not that enjoyable there without any breeze.

Chilly,
What do you like better than Ramon's?
chilly - 02 Mar 2008 02:51 GMT
> Chilly,
> What do you like better than Ramon's?

The Palms, just for starters and it's right next door.  If you can do
without a pool, then look at Belizean Reef, which is right next door to the
Palms.

If you are happy with only a hotel room, rather than a kitchenette or suite,
look at the Sunbreeze.

If you don't mind being a bit further south of town, I love a little place
called Mata Rocks.

Xanadu is fabulous.

And the list goes on.

What are your particular wants, needs or desires?
John Smith - 03 Mar 2008 04:07 GMT
I stayed at the Mayan Princess a couple of years ago and was thinking
about going back.  No pool, but Amigos del Mar had their dive operation
there.  The distances weren't very great, although I never got north of
the "ferry".

I most often stay at the Mayan Princess.  However, I've decided to quit
recommending it because it is getting hard for me to get a room there.

I most often dive with Amigos.

There is no ferry anymore.  They put in a bridge.  There's lots of
development going on north of the "ferry" now.

I hope "we" is you and your beloved.  To me, Ambergris Caye has always
been a honeymoon trip.  Diving is good, but not world-class.
Divemasters have been known to bait some nurse sharks for your
videoing pleasure.

San Pedro is the charm.  Walk on the beach, order Fish a la Elvie at
Elvies, watch the sundown at wherever they have a rooftop bar.  Relax
and enjoy.

You can take a boat trip to an inland Mayan ruin for your non-diving
day.  It's an all-day trip.  You can climb the pyramid.  If you look
sharp, you can spot an Amish farm along the river.

Just curious, how many honeymoons have you had?

In 38 years of marrige, quite a few.

You go on all your honeymoon's there?  I've never been on a honeymoon there
yet, though I can see the island's potential in that regard.

> Diving is good, but not world-class.

dsziede can go and enjoy the good diving and take a day trip or two out to
the Atolls for some world-class diving.

> Divemasters have been known to bait some nurse sharks for your

Unfortunately, all too true.  That said, on one of my last dives the nurse
shark followed the dive master around like a puppy.  It wanted to be petted.
It was just a little duffer and he knew exactly who he wanted.  It
definitely wasn't about being fed, it was most definitely about being
petted.  I've never seen anything like it before, despite all the
interaction I've seen between the DM's and the nurse sharks.

Go to the Palapa Bar on a lovely afternoon, enjoy a cool one or two while
you stare out at the multiple colors of the Belizean sea.

All that and more.  You can visit the zoo, go cave tubing or Mayan cave
trekking.
