there are some on this diving board who are afflicted by the "green-eyed
monster!"

No, it is not a creature from the deep!  It is a creature that lies in
the heart of man...it is called jealousy!

Shakespeare in "Otello" speaks of it when Iago says".

"Jealousy... that green-eyed monster that mocks the very meat that it
feeds upon."

You know the routine..."green with envy!"

That helps explain the often "mocking tone" of Greg's posts here.

I can hardly wait to hear this one.  Who is it you think Greg envies?

And has -he- started any threads about -you- yet, Daniel?

 It's Spring, isn't it?

Do the Rec.scuba rules pertaining to Hero Worship apply here?

 Just curious.

I think being worshipped in .locations would be an elite
accomplishment, a tier above mere rec.scuba worship, due to the
usually more secular yet sacred nature of the group (even Bob
occasionally refused to rant here).  It's definitely something to
inspire jealousy.

"Vince" on HBO's Entourage
Daniel Kessler - 04 Apr 2007 21:06 GMT
It could be that Greg was traumitized by watching an old movie "Typhoon"
[1937] on late night TV...

...maybe you've heard of it?

That's the one where John Hall and Dorothy Lamour were tied to a palm tree
together in the hope of surviving the storm!

What's wrong with that?

The guys we rescued off Koh Tachai after the tsunami had survived by
holding onto trees.  I bet they wished they had rope.

"Jealousy,"  I love that song!  Who's it by, Natalie Merchant, I think.

Hey, just the guy I wanted to hear from.  I've got you two free adult
admissions to the Maui Ocean Center a week from today, plus 50% off
for the kids.  All you have to do is hop over to Maui and meet us at
the Ocean Center front door by 8 a.m.  We're going diving in the tank
with their new tiger shark.

We're connecting in HNL on our way in Thursday night, so look for my
wave!

(After the shark dive on Friday morning, we're doing a dusk/night 2-
tank dive that night, a 2-tank Lanai dive on Saturday morning, and a 1-
tank scooter dive to a manta cleaning station on Saturday afternoon.
My cousin's wedding is on Sunday and we're heading to their BBQ on
Saturday night, so that's all the diving we can fit it in before we
leave )

I'm afraid we will have to decline.  The wife and I just got back from
4 days on Lana'i and that took care or our travel budget for quite
some time.  What a great island but mind boggling expensive.

I thought 95% of it was planted in pineapples.  Sounds great if you
like pineapples, I guess.  That's too bad about your travel budget,
but precisely why I was offering free admission.  Can't you get a
kamaina rate on the air fare?  I can try to help you crash the wedding
for free food, and you can sleep on the beach or on my lanai.

Do you realize how frustrating it is to have free tickets to the Ocean
Center and not be able to give them away?  Maybe I'll offer them to
Daniel Kessler.

Sorry.  We still got a two-week trip to Australia in June. (Daughter's
swim meet.)  Could I cop some slack by telling you my son has a
Birthday Party he promised to attend?  Kid's change one's prioritiies.

Alright then.  I'll take a rain check.  Besides, I'm done with Maui as
well as the Kauai and the Big Island.  The one main island I haven't
dove is Oahu (I'm skipping Molokai, having heard the diving ain't so
hot there, and the boat trip from Kauai to dive off Niihau doesn't
sound very fun).  We actually tried to stay in Oahu in December, but
ended up in Maui again because I couldn't find a single Starwood hotel
room in Honolulu - it was the triple draw of a Pearl Harbor
anniversary, the Honolulu Marathon, and a U2 concert all on one
weekend.

But my next trip there, I promise to stay on Waikiki and give you
absolutely no excuse to avoid me.

Fair enough!

First, If you haven't been to Niihau, you must go.  Yes, the boat ride will
be a trip to remember but the diving will be the best you have ever known in
Hawaii.

Second, Lanai used to be the "Pineapple Isle" but all pineapple production
ceased completely and suddenly in 1995.  Dole Pineapple then sold the island
(or the 95% of it that it owned) to a private company.  That private company
has built two very fine resorts and a couple of dozen multi-million $
mansions.  Otherwise it has left the island undeveloped.  There are 350
hotel rooms and 3000 locals, almost all of whom work for Castle&Cook.  They
went from being a plantation island that farmed pineapples to a plant ion
island that farms the rich and famous.  It is the kind of place you go to
get away from hoi polloi, but you must pay for that privilege.

That said, Molokai could be similar except the locals DO NOT WANT YOU THERE!
The "Friendly Isle" my a.s.  They won't let you do anything unless you hire
a guide.  As far as the diving goes, I've heard mixed reviews but the place
remains pretty much unexplored.  If you are going to dive it, you'll have to
find your own local charter.  The difference between Molokai and Lanai is
that on Lanai almost everyone works for a single employer whose job is
catering to the rich: if you aren't nice to the tourists, you are voted off
the island.  On Molokai, most of the residents are unemployed or
underemployed in the nescient tourist industry and very bitter about it.

You know all about Maui and there really isn't much to say about diving off
the Big Island so I won't go there.

Just give me plenty or warning when you are coming out next.  At this point
in my life the kids come first.

Just curious, why the worries about the boat trip to Niihau,
or am I forbidden to ask? ;)  When I was there, the boat trip
was very enjoyable, especially with the whales in the area.
And, the diving is very worth even a rough trip.  Dan

You were out early enough in the season that the whales were still around?
Sounds like you really lucked out.  Normally no charter is willing to make
the crossing until May (when the northern swells subside) and it usually
closes down by September.  I've done it a couple of times and even in the
middle of summer, it can be one wild ride.

I believe it could be wild.  Guess I was just there at the right time, but
I'll take that.  Luck beats skill sometimes ;).  Dan
