Do you have any info to report on your diving there?

Yes, I'm back, and yes I have more information, but I have a lot of
stuff to catch up on, not the least of which is sorting through the 4
zillion photos I took to find the 2 or 3 worth keeping.

So much for the, "I don't carry a camera so I can just enjoy the
diving" guy we all knew and loved.

need to buy a replacement camera, as i lost my last one.  what a goober.  i
think a sea and sea digital 8000.  any comments on that?  my sea and sea
film i just loved because it was so easy to use.   i am just taking pics for
fun, not professtional grade.

I have a Sony point and shoot, 4 megapixels, and a Sony Housing.
Works great, despite my lack of talent.   Many pictures taken here,
http://www.pathcom.com/~bracuk/underwater/index.htm, were taken with
that camera.  Those that were, were taken with the camera's internal
flash only.  Give it a day or two, and I will have added some more,
taken with natural light only.

From what I understand, Canon, Olympus, and a few other brands are
just as good as Sony.  In fact, if I were to make my purchase all over
again, I would probably go with Canon because their flash cards give
you a bit more flexibility than Sony's memory sticks.

Does it use the MX10 lenses?  I'm considering switching to digital,
but I have too much invested in glass for my two cameras.

Yes, and I loved it.  It took pretty good pictures, and some of them were
really good.  Plus I used it on land too.  Since I lost it about a year ago,
I have been diving naked (as far as camera goes).  I just think a digital
Sea&Sea would work for basic stuff.

Actually just the same. I was bushwacked with a housing for an old 7mp
camera I already had. I carry no strobe, it goes in my dive bag, stays
clipped off and frequently stays on the boat. It's principle raison
d'etre is research support. I carry it to document conditions and
specimens for PBC Reef Rescue. It definitely detracts from my diving
experience.

Yet you still somehow managed to take 4 zillions photos, huh?  I hope
you know that you photographers are the real scourge of the reefs.

What ever happened with your Bali trip?

Unh, did you know that it's possible to take photos *above* water?

You're singing to the choir, son.

Which one? We didn't go this year, we swapped for Palau. We're going
back thru bali early 2007. We're also trying to get a trip together on
Kararu, but it's diffficult to work out.

Janna handles that part as I have no time left after fiddling with my
UW gear.  Was there anything in Palau above water (other than Jellyfish
Lake)?  I didn't notice.

I gave up trying to deal with Kararu direct, mainly because I couldn't
get a fax to go through no matter what.  Dumped the hassle in the lap
of a travel agent listed on the website who not only finished the work
without costing me a penny more but also negotiated a partial refund
when we got burned on the "master stateroom" upgrade.  I was so
satisfied that I gave her my upcoming Bonaire booking, as Buddy's
website still doesn't do online reservations.

Komodo is one island where I did have to take some of the topside
photos, mainly because my long-lens Sony F717 which is so miserable
underwater, can't shoot worth crap on land either because the zoom is
so weak.  I therefore had to get Steve Irwin-close to the dragons in
order to get anything decent.  Janna has no problem getting her face
into sharks and fingers into eels underwater but was apprehensive about
the big lizards.
