I'm looking to do a dive weekend anywhere between Ft. Lauderdale and W.
Palm in the middle of January as cheaply as possible. I've already got
free air travel. I can live spartanly in terms of lodging and food. I
want quality diving.

Ideal would be to stay in a place close enough to the dive operator
that I could walk there from the hotel, so I won't have to rent a car.
Hotel/motel can be one star (roach content less than 30 ppm). A few
close-by eating establishments would be nice.

Any suggestions from the S. Florida residents on here?

Thanks in advance.

Bahia cabana in Fort Lauderdale.

ON the ICWW,   Excellent outdoor bar/restaurant with good food for
cheap.    Walk to FLL strip, across the road from the beach. Old spring
break sized rooms but recently redone with new beds, etc.   Diving at
American dream 5 minutes west or prodive 5 minutes north (I prefer
American Dream... call undersea sports to book it. 954-527-5505)   can't
really walk to the dive boats but the hotel is 10 minutes from the
airport and FL rentals are usually cheaper than a cab to Pompano.

Great wreck dives from 65' to 130' to tech if you want.   OK reefs (Keys
have better reefs but we have more wrecks)   Good beach dives as well,
15 minutes up the road in Lauderdale By the Sea.

Also... Sands hotel in Pompano fits the bill.   Dive boats are in the
same marina, $45 cab from the hotel but no car needed after you get
there.  About 6 restaurants within walking distance (For the best
$$...go to the Sands restaurant on the ICWW or across the bridge at
Piranah pats... Houstons is also across the bridge but more $$$$)

Best Boat at sands is Scuba Tyme.   Again, call undersea sports to book
it. 954-527-5505

I assume free airfare is on Southwest?   if so FLL gives you more
options and the airport is closer to the east side of town.

I live in N FLL right off A1A and the ICWW ... would be happy to answer
any questions.   just replace the "nospam" with "estrobel"  in my email
address.
