Would someone recommend a great digital camera which can be housed for
underwater use?

I am looking at the Fuji Finepix F30, but wonder if there are better
cameras for the money out there which can take great underwater
pictures.  Canon, Nikon, Olympus, etc.

Dollar range - $500 or so.

I am trying to take close-ups of coral polyps, etc. and need a camera
that can focus on the small stuff....my current Olympus Stylus can't
focus close.

Take the picture from where your camera works and crop it later.  FWIW
my Sony point and shoot has a macro feature that allows me to get as
close as 10 cm.

I recently bought a Canon Powershot A620 (7Mp), which has a close focus
of 1cm, and I am very happy with it.  It has just been replaced by the
A640 (10Mp) which looks like it will also be well received.  The A620
was 160 pounds + 130 pounds for the underwater housing.

I've put some pictures from last weekends Farne Islands trip at
http://harrowsubaqua.org.uk/photos/20060908Farne_I/index.html

IMG_0374.JPG, IMG_0493.JPG, and IMG_0502.JPG have had the colour balance
tweaked to remove some of the green cast which can be seen in the
thumbnails, and which is inevitable in these waters.  I haven't played
with the white balance underwater to try and improve the originals.

IMG_0348.JPG and IMG_0363.JPG have been cropped from the original, which
again can be seen in the thumbnail (just!).

In IMG_0525.JPG you can see that getting close leads to uneven lighting
from the built-in flash.

How about saying sterling or quid?  My first vision was of a huge
honking camera.

A620     GBP160 (pounds sterling)
Housing  GBP130

It may not be ultra-compact, but it doesn't need it's own trolley!

If you take away your digital requirement, the  BEST VALUE UW
camera that has good macro capabilities is the MX-10 with strobe
I found at about 100 fsw, separated from its rental owner.

At the suggestion of the boat captain, that the rental company probably
had already filed the claim for the loss, so it's "finders keepers".
Since
the DM usese the same camera for his picture taking, I gave him the
strobe, and kept the camera until I received a new one from the
president of the company in Japan when the USA distributor would not
honor its warranty.

After I got the new one, I put the camera on E-bay (gave a local
middle man 30% for doing all the work, shipping, money collection,
etc.) and had over $100 net for the UW find.   :-)

The divers in Cozumel must be getting BETTER.   I used to find lots of
valuables just DIVING., from knives, lights, masks, money pouches,
and lots of LEAD.   :-)

But that was the first complete camera outfit (nearly new) I found
there.

I love my MX-10.  Macro and close up lenses.  The only issue is the
film, but I roll my own 400 and usually get 40-42 shots out of a roll.

My recommendation is to go with a company that makes both the camera
and housing.  I like my Sony.  Others like their Canons.  When you get
right down to it, they're all good.

I'm looking at the Fuji FX-30 - reviews seem quite positive.
Triple Jumper - 19 Sep 2006 21:42 GMT
I've just used a Canon Ixus 60 (European marketing name) with Canon
housing, total 400GBP.  Takes great pictures, but not so hot macros /
close-ups.  Better at the 3-10 feet range.

Best Value? Picked up a reusable underwater camera for $12 down in Key
Largo last weekend. Good to 100'. We took it that deep and no leaks.
Uses regular 35mm film and is reloadable, has a flash, etc. Pretty damm
good deal for $12! Can't remember the brand name, but picked it up at a
Circle K store.

This $12 camera is a good value to you, but not to a lot of people.
Think about the backscatter (those white spots you must have in many of
the pictures you took), the lack of good optics, the lack of a strobe
that makes a total diference underwater. Sure this camera is a good
introduction to UW photography as my MX-5 was for me, but it can´t be
taken seriously by professionals or even serious amateurs.

I use  the Olympus 5060 in a pt-020 housing  this camera is now superseded
but is  just awesome
try the Olympus  store on www.ebay.com if your in the States or Canada you
cant beat this
most items are new  with full warranty with minor packaging scuffing I
recently purchased the wide angle lens and attachment and as stated its
brand new undamaged

also check out www.digitaldiver.com
there are  many there who will help you all you need to do is ask
or
www.bluetales.com
check out the pics  there and also
www.pbase.com
search for the camera  you are looking at and  see the results others  are
achieving with that model
hope this helps
feel free to email me if you wish

But an MX-10 with all the lenses is a good choice.  It gives me
flexibility that many other cameras lack.  Cathy Church once told me
that "as soon as I put a macro lens on, a whale shark comes by".  No
sweat for me, I just change lenses.  I just wish Sea&Sea still made
the digital body for the MX-10 lenses.  Does anyone know why they
dropped it?
