I still remember the days when it was $1 entrance fee and $5 to rent a
tank.
The last time I dived at Chankanaab, few years ago, the park entrance
fee
was about $5 and I was shocked that one of the tank rantal stands would
not rent me a tank because I was diving solo! So, I rented the tank
from
the next stand.
We decided to try the Park for our shore dive today because of the easy
entry and the dive is usually fair decent, with lots of reef fish, a
tarpon or
two at the cave, etc. We had a car, so that's $20 we didn't have to
pay
for the roundtrip taxi fare.
The first little surprise was that the park entrance fee is now $16.
Ah well,
since we were there already, it's only money. But then the NEXT
surprise
is no longer a matter of money but a matter or PRINCIPLE. It is now
Mexican government regulated that a diver must have a "dive guide"
for $10 in addition to the tank rental of $11 per tank! THAT did it.
Goodbye Chankanaab Scuba, forever!
We drove further south to find the shore entry on Corona Beach is now
not on the new highway, but on the old road which was blocked.
So, we went on down to San Francisco beach where there ARE two
of dive shops, only one operating. The beach is not exactly where
scuba diver wants to do a dive because it has no corals, and a few
blades of grass. But since we were not there for a DIVE, but for
further checking of ears, it would do, after the Chankanaab outrage.
The DM at the shop was short on tanks because he had more divers
for the boat dive than he expected, but once he knew we were both
experienced divers, he said he would let us have two half-tanks for
FREE when the boat comes in. And so he did. We had to go out
a fair distance before we hit 20 fsw! We saw a few tiny fish, near
some clumps of weeds. But it was another successful dive, for
the EARS. 86F temp, max depth 20 fsw, 30 minutes of BT, and
we had 1000 psi left from the half tanks when we returned them.
A nice consolation dive after the Chankanaab Park abortion.

So I guess the stories about Chankanaab being wiped out by hurricanes
are not current. I wonder how that dive guide thing applies to the
airplane dive at La Ceiba, or is it now El Cid?

If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.

Definitely out-dated. It's alive and too well. The captive dolphin
thing
seems to be the current rage (double entendre intended).

Didn't get to dive La Ceiba to even know if the plane is still there.
La Ceiba pier is completely wiped out again. La Ceiba is now
being seriously remodeled into a Resort type of outfit.
Forgot to mention -- that's what I learned from Leo, the one-
time manager-partner of Humberto's Blue Bubbles. Leo now
has a stand below the Bahia hotel, selling condos and other
stuff. :-) Blue Bubble may have only one boat now because
they have 3 DMs and 2 of them were on a boat on San
Francisco beach today.

P.S. I don't ever killfile anyone. Lee and Jer and the rest of
the no-scuba-knowledge-or-know-how nincompoops are just
IGNORED in their posted noise.

When we were there last Thanksgiving, it was closed and there appeared
to be quite a bit of damage... I suspect that they've had time to
rebuild...

Noe Schitt Sherlock!
Last Thanksgiving to July is a long time even by Mexican standards.
The Punta Langosta pier did not take THAT long to build. It's a
matter
of priority and $$$.
It is taking them longer to RE-build the 3 cruise ship piers because
the cruise ships do NOT depend on the piers. They are here almost
everyday, anchoring or holding position off shore. As soon as they
find the $$$ to rebuild, it could be done in a matter of weeks.
The government is still using the available funds to work on the
innovations at the airport, and the road to the lighthouse -- which
is still having many kilometers unfinished and not likely to be
finished any time soon. But 18 kilometers had been paved since
the project started several years ago.

The park was partially open in early April, although they reportedly
had lots to still do. The dolphin "experience" was opened in early
May.

That was when I said "Noe Schitt Sherlock."

That only qualified for a "Noe Schitt"
When I used to go to Cozumel in less than 3-month intervals ...
every three months or so there are completely NEW news.
As of the end of July there are now THREE entrances to Chankanaab.
One to pay your entry fee: $16 per person. Some days (not sure which
ones but it was on the day we went) it has a 2-for-1 promotional entry
fee. That made it only $8 pp for entrance. (To the Dolphin park
entrance).
For others there are shuttles on trucks with wooden benches to shuttle
the cattle to the beach and scuba part where there is no longer the
platform for swimmers nor the adjacent chairs for sun bathing and
swimming or the palapa for meals. I assume that's in the THIRD
entrance to the park.
In short ... it appears to be more streamlined for the "cattle crowd"
and less suitable for those who just want to do their own swimming
or diving there.

Gee, Bob-o-Ling, sorry to hear about your grumpiness. Of course, this
should come as no surprise to you, but the park fees were raised at the
same time that Puta Langosta abortion was completed. Thanks to the
cruise pukes, Coz is no longer what it once was in more ways than one.
Oh, and the reason that one fella wouldn't rent to a solo gringo is
because, as far as some Coz dive ops are concerned, gringos travel with
their attorney and they don't need the grief.
