Looking for suggestions for a family vacation that offers some great warm
water beginner snorkeling for my family (age 12, 15, and adult).

Your choices for warm water snorkeling in the US are:

1. Florida

California in summer almost qualifies, if you stay on the surface on a
warm day.

Well, we're in California.  We want warm water.  I snorkeled La Jolla Cove
many times in my youth.

Lee also left out Hawaii.  A couple degrees chillier than Florida, maybe,
but the snorkeling is far better.  Oahu has Hanauma Bay, plus other tourist
sights, but you're probably better off on one of the other islands.

So, for a family snorkeling vacation, if Hawaii, but not Oahu, where?

The traditional three alternatives are Maui, Hawaii ("the Big Island"), and
Kauai.  Molakai and Lanai receive far fewer tourists and have no direct
flights from the mainland U.S.  Each of the islands has its own merits.
Maui is the most developed and most expensive, but also has the best dining
and most tourist attractions, including snorkeling trips over to Molokini
Crater.  The Big Island is big.  It also has plenty of tourist attractions,
but you'll be driving a lot further to get to them.  It's cheaper than Maui
and more laid back and snorkeling there is excellent due to the water
clarity - as a relatively new island, there's very little dirt to cause
run-off problems (this pertains to the dry west coast, not the wet Hilo
side).  Kauai is the smallest of the three, and the oldest, so the water
might be a bit murkier but that's not really an issue at snorkel depths.

If money is no object, and crowds don't scare you, I'd opt for Maui as
having the greatest range of family activities.  On the other hand, if you
want a more laid-back island experience, the Big Island or Kauai might be
better.  You won't go wrong with any of them and, if you have the time, you
can always check out more than one island.  Just don't make the mistake of
cramming too many islands into too little time, or you risk spending half
your vacation at the airport.

Wow!  Thanks.

S. Padre Island, TX. Check it out. Clear warm water. 82 degrees now.

I considered the Gulf coast of Texas, but everything I've been told about it
suggests the visibility sucks.  Interesting to hear differently.  Make your
choices:
1. Florida
2. S. Padre Island, Texas

I didn't see the OP - Did he specify the time of year?
The water in Florida in the winter is not all that warm.

Did he specify the mainland?  How is the water in Hawaii (still the
US)?  Wouldn't that qualify?

The water in the Chesapeake is quite warm especially in August.   My
MIL would never swim until the water was bathtub temp.   However the
viz is nil most of the time and there are jellyfish.

No.  At its coldest, the water in S. Florida is warmer than the water in
California is at its warmest.

Don't know anything about water temperatures in Hawaii.  Ask me again in a
year.

Define bathtub temp.  8^))

I'm thinking July or August.  Mainland US or Hawaii.  I was curious about
Texas, but expected to be lead toward Florida or Hawaii.

The density and diversity of underwater life, particularly small colorful
fish, on south Florida's shallow reefs is as good or better than I've seen
anywhere in the Caribbean or Bahamas.  I can't say that it's not also very
good in Hawaii or Padre island since I've never been either place.  By this
time next year, that may have changed.

Oh.. I thought the same coming from Crystal River where we all know
the Gulf's vis. sucks. This isn't the normal Gulf water here. Pretty
clear stuff. There's a lot of jetty diving (20-40 fsw) if you can
believe it. What's really interesting about this place and I'm
guessing is that it's so far south in the US that not many folks come
here. There's nothing between here and something. Not much to do
except dive, fish and lay on the beach. Good spearing fishing too. The
hunters head for the rigs. We just got two gas rigs about thirteen
miles off shore.

And the quality and quantity of underwater life is?
Ed - 18 Jun 2006 20:07 GMT
Family friendly... warm water.... US....    Key largo or islamorada.

For a great hotel... marriott... keys beach, nice rooms or suites.

More budget minded and closer to the dive boats... marina del Mar,
Holiday Inn/Ramada Inn... all the same owner.

The snorkeling is 10x better than anywhere else in the US and many more
spots.   (Yes I have been to hawaii 5 times... still no comparison)

Thanks for the hotel suggestions and location tips.

BTW... Southwest flies to Fort lauderdale (2 hours from KL)
Miami Intl is 90 min from KL.  Key west is $$$$ and is 2 hours from KL.
