Can anyone recomend a dive shop in Maui?
Barry - 20 Feb 2006 13:49 GMT
Yes, I dove with Ed Robinson when in Maui recently. The operation and
his staff were wonderful. Very knowledgeable and helpful, when needed. I
would not dive with anyone else were I returning to Maui.

I would. Mike Severns diving is right next to Ed Robinson at Kihei, and
offers the same quality and level of professionallism. I wouldn't
hesitate to dive with either of these operators. The only drawback
(such that it is), is that they don't like to take anyone with less
than 25 dives experience. This weeds out some of the truely clueless,
and let's them offer better sites and much more freedom than most of
the cattleboat operators out of Lahaina.

Twelve divers max.  Marine biologists as dive masters.  Closer to most
of the dive spots (it's an "easy" 30 minute cruise from Lahaina to
Kihei).

The cattleboats won't do dives like Molokini Backside (which really
takes two dives to do properly).  Columbus Day, 1992 we did Molokai.
Cattleboats weren't doing that one.

Severns (and I assume Robinson) let you dive your own profile. The
only restriction is to ascend as a buddy team.  But at the experience
level of most of the divers I've run into on their boats, that's not
an issue.

What is nice about Molokini Backside?

It's a monster wall dive, definitely deep, with lots of critters on
the wall and in the blue.  I wouldn't do it every trip, but I'd like
to do it again on our next Maui trip.

A very advanced dive, and you'll be the only people on it.  It's a
"follow me" dive.  You'll have to swim into blue water before you
ascend to keep from meeting up with the rocks and to get to the boat.

Correction, Kaho'olawe.

Former Navy target.

Would be the one place I'd avoid at all costs.

Oh, that.

Well, as a fairly new diver, I really appreciated the support they
offer. Also, traveling without a dive buddy, it's good to have a group.

I thought they were quite knowledgeable and super friendly, and except
for Molokini, you're usually the only boat at any given site.

Why is that? I've had nothing but good dives with them.

Because some people here can't shut their cesspool of
traphole..............

"Our Dive Vessels: Dominion and Dauntless are 46 feet in length and were
built in Slidell, Louisiana. Each vessel has twin Cummins 430 horsepower
diesel engines and is USCG certified. We take a max of 24 divers on each
vessel."

24 divers on a 46' boat?  Talk about cesspool . . .  That's what all that
cattle smells like on a hot day.
