Does anyone have any recent news about Holbox?  I would like to spend a
couple days there on my next trip to Cozumel.

Or it is not well known.   Here are a few websites to peruse and
contact for local info.

I was there last year to see the whale sharks.  It was a great
experience but other than that I did not find Holbox that great.  If
you like small, sleepy, less developed you should enjoy it.

I was thinking they were wondering more along the lines of how it fared in
the Great Hurricanes of 2005.  One of your links links to some info:

"Hurricane WILMA destroyed the island lashing it with 6 hours of 200 kph+
winds and a 9 foot sea & storm surge. The maximum elevation on this
picturesque island is just 3 feet.  When the eye of Wilma left the Yucatan
it passed by this tiny island on the northern tip near Cancun. In its wake
it left 4-5 feet of SALT WATER in every house. EVERYTHING everyone owned is
basically destroyed!"

"Further, there is NO ELECTRICITY 75% of the utility poles are down &
twisted. The main waterline from the mainland 7 miles away is broken so
there is NO WATER for cleaning, bathing etc. The towns Reverse Osmosis
plants cannot produce Fresh Drinking/Cooking water without electricity. The
ultimate disaster is the ferry barge that brings EVERYTHING to the island
including gasoline, diesel for the electric plant, food,
supplies...everything. The only way anything is now getting to the island is
by small boat & gasoline supplies are LOW!"

So as long as you like small, sleepy, less developed, and as long as you
bring your own water, generator, gasoline, food, supplies, everything, you
should enjoy it.

Considering how you are getting answers here, you'd be better off to ask the
question again here:  http://dive.scubadiving.com/talk/list.php?1

Thanks Chilly and the others that posted responses.  Based on a couple links it
looks like some, if not most of the services are restored.  I was hoping someone
might have been there since the last hurricane but I guess I can take my
chances.  I only want to try the swimming with the whale sharks.  Guess I can
stay in Cancun the first night, drive over to Holbox for the day then drive down
to Playa Del Carmen and take the ferry to Cozumel.

Ok Chris, now you ask what you really want.  First off the whale
sharks are only there a few months during the summer. At least in
numbers worth trying to swim with them.

Then the boats leave around 0730.  Can you get from Cancun to the town
south of Holbox, catch a ferry, then get to the docks by 0715 or so?
So you probably want to spend the night before on Holbox.  You should
be back around 1130 or so and may make the noonish ferry if you are
packed and ready to go.

Thanks Ron for the information.  We get in early afternoon.  My original plan was to
go directly to Holbox and spend two nights then head to Cozumel.  I think I'll go
back to plan A....I plan to be there in late July.  Is that a good time to see whale
sharks?   Any hotel recommendations?

Chris, I went in late July and it was great.   Whale sharks, eagle
rays and dolphin-like creatures.  I have to recall where I stayed but
I think it was Casa Las Tortugas.  It was terrible.  No air
conditioning and the noise from a disco a block or so away kept me
awake one night until 3 AM.

Had I stayed another night I would have looked into this hotel or any
further north or further south of Las Tortugas

Do you recall who you went out with to see the whale sharks?  I assume, from what I've
read, this is a snorkle "dive" not a SCUBA dive.

Chris
If the enemy is in range, so are you.......
