Much easier to take a later ferry and dive with Caballitos or another
ferry-friendly op. If you want to wake up at 5 a.m. to dive, you might as
well dive in Hawaii. Even so, in Maui, it's a beautiful cruise down a
splendid highway with the sunrise over the Pacific, ending up in an
uncrowded parking lot to meet the friendly dive crew and drink coffee. At
PDC, it's stand in a long line, check in bag(s), sit on a crowded ferry,
stand in line to pick up bag(s), then get to your dive op by dodging time
share sellers and cruiseros on the walk to the Aldora pier. If I were the
OP, I'd ditch the rest of the group and stay in Cozumel the whole time.
Probably no one would miss him.

The last comment makes sense. Another option is to make afternoon
dives or a twilight doubleheader (includes a night dive). Many dive
shops can do either.
