Hi,

I thinking of going to Playa del Carmen because with a non-diving wife
staying on Cozumel is probably out due to lack of other things to do.

Has anyone done this, and is it possible to dive around Cozumel from
there, or is the diving in P.de.C. also worthwhile?

TIA, Barry.

It's possible.  I suggest you use a dive op that caters to day
trippers from the mainland.  Two that I have dove with are Seafaris
and Caballito des Caribes (http://www.seahorsecozumel.com/).

If you are staying at a large resort, they might have local travel
agents in the lobby that can arrange your diving for you.

If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.

The other logistics issues to consider is when the dive op leaves
which determines your ferry departure from PDC.  Plus if they pick up
from a pier intown that means you can walk from the ferry to the dive
op pier (Aldora or Aqua Safari).  Ferry time is about 35 minutes but
allow perhaps 10 more to get off and get your bag.

Otherwise you may have to take a taxi to the Caleta by El Presidente
or wherever they pick up.

I would do it at least one day.  I never hear of people raving about
diving in the PDC area (unless you do the cenotes)

I agree, the ferry would be the way to go.  There are two competing ferries
that alternate hours.  Buy the round trip ticket and you'll save a buck or
two. Aldora and another dive shop just under Vista Del Mar hotel are within
a 1 minute walk of the ferry pier.  Schedule shouldn't be a problem getting
there, but Aldora tends to start 10-20 minutes before all the other boats
do.

However, just because your wife doesn't dive doesn't mean she'd be bored on
the island.  My wife doesn't dive and she loved the place so much we bought
a condo down there.  There are numerous things to do and the merchants don't
hawk you as much as they do in PDC.

Try an hour.  I believe you need to be at the Aldora pier around 715
AM.  That means a 6 AM ferry.

Then that would be the first ferry of the day, and it's often booked to
the gills with off-islanders on their way to work.  Don't be late.

Much easier to take a later ferry and dive with Caballitos or another
ferry-friendly op.  If you want to wake up at 5 a.m. to dive, you might as
well dive in Hawaii.  Even so, in Maui, it's a beautiful cruise down a
splendid highway with the sunrise over the Pacific, ending up in an
uncrowded parking lot to meet the friendly dive crew and drink coffee.  At
PDC, it's stand in a long line, check in bag(s), sit on a crowded ferry,
stand in line to pick up bag(s), then get to your dive op by dodging time
share sellers and cruiseros on the walk to the Aldora pier.  If I were the
OP, I'd ditch the rest of the group and stay in Cozumel the whole time.
Probably no one would miss him.

The last comment makes sense.  Another option is to make  afternoon
dives or a twilight doubleheader (includes a night dive).   Many dive
shops can do either.
