I'm considering a March trip to the Floriday Keys. What is the water
temperature like in the Keys in March compared to Hawaii in October? Would
I need a wet suit for snorkeling in March? (Am I crazy to consider
snorkeling in March??)

Thanks.

Google is your freind.

I recently put "florida keys water termperature" into the search box
and got my answer.  I think the answer was in the mid 70s.  Something
similar should work with Hawaii.

Here's a link to the buoys off the coast of Florida:
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Florida.shtml.  Key Largo water temp at
Molasses Reef is currently around 75F.  Unfortunately the Sand Key buoy off
the coast of Key West is still damaged due to one of the damn hurricanes
last year.  I think if you snoop around on that website you will find
historical data.  I would expect March water temp to about the same as
today, and maybe even a little cooler.  But I'm sure it's still warmer than
Hawaii.

BTW, where are you going in the Keys?  If diving is just a small part of the
vacation, then Key West is the only place to go in my opinion.  But if
diving is the main point, then definitely go to Key Largo and definitely
dive the Spiegel Grove.  You'll love it.  And if you do decide on Key Largo,
I highly recommend going out with Scott Fowler at
http://www.dualporpoise.net/.

Fort Lauderdale surface was 71 this weekend so I would suspect 3-5
degrees higher in Key largo and a couple degrees warmer in KW.  I am a
florida diver so I use a 3+3 mil suit (3 mil farmer john with a 3 mil
jacket over...)   My daughter used a 3/2 (3 torso, 2 legs/arms) and we
were both warm this weekend.    Air temps were in the 80s this week but
usually we are in the 70s this time of year for a high.

Come on down, the keys need the money and the reefs are MUCH nicer here
than Hawaii.  (And yes..I have been diving there 3 times so i can
compare a newer Atoll to a more mature limestone based eco system)

Reefs in Florida better than Hawaii?

Are you under some kind of strong medication?

I've dove both.  Kona is very nice.  Looe Key is nicer.

You wrote this a while back, right?  I'd be surprised if the surface
temperatures were anywhere close to 71 this time of year.

Yeah, but the fish in Hawaii are different and I've seen most that live in
Ft. Lauderdale.

Thanks for the info. I actually don't have any specific plans yet. I've
never been to South Florida before. I only scuba dived maybe six times
before my certification lapsed years ago so I'll be snorkeling once I get
down there. I'll probably spend several days in the Everglades before
heading for the Keys.

Take a refresher course.  You should be able to find a local dive shop that
will recertify you with just a few hours of class time and pool time,
assuming of course that you still have the skills and can review the
material before the class.  As Ed said, Keys diving is great.  And
snorkeling is hard work.  :-)

Your certification lapsed?  Who issued it?  What was it?

The Everglades, the other reason I live in S. Florida.  I spent New Years
day putting through knee deep mud on our new ATVs.

It was *years* ago when I was certified ... 1988, I think by PADI. Unless
I'm wrong, I seem to recall that certifications didn't lapse back then.
It was in the mid-90s that a coworker mentioned getting certified and
said that they lapse if you didn't use them. I just took her word for it
... even if it hasn't lapsed, I wouldn't think of going out without
retraining.

I'm interested in doing some paddling and photography while down there.
My ocean adventures with mask, snorkel, and fins will be about 40% of my
fun.

It's all relative.. I just dove yesterday on the St. Lawrence river... 0*C
(32*F).  Wanna talk cold?
