The Caribbean is warm this year. 80 to 82 would be my guess.  I spent
Thanksgiving in the Eastern Caribbean and Atlantic and it was 82.

It's being reported that the water temp in the Bay Islands is only 78.

Don't worry.  The hurricane will warm it up.

You promised me good weather.  You said it was your turn to have good
weather.

So far, the weather looks to be not so bad as it was last year at this time,
so I've got my fingers crossed.  It is just the water temp that's got me a
tad concerned.  In any event, I have my banana *and* a hood.  I just hope I
don't need a vest too.

See you next week (or so).

It's hard to say.  I think the weather was pretty good on my last two dive
trips.  Actually, we had phenominal weather in Cocos (smack dab in the
middle of the rainy season and almost no rain until the trip back), and
pretty decent weather in Kauai (only one day of rain).  There's no way I'll
get lucky three times in a row.

On the other hand, I'm traveling with some pretty weather-lucky people, the
same guys who found the windfree Belize week in March the same year I was
blown out in May.

I'm going expecting crummy weather, so I'm not going to be disappointed.  I
might be pleasantly surprised, however.  Don't scare all the fish away with
that freakin' banana and your DIR buddy.

Bah.  I've had 79 on my last two trips, so 78 should be OK.  The secret is
to drink lots of rum afterward, like frozen alpinists saved by St. Bernards.

Not if I see you first.

According to reports, it's not to bad there right now.  Remember, keep all
the fingers and toes crossed.

Geez, I hope we can count on them.

As you know, I'm a vodka drinker.  That said, the Monkey Lala's are
delicious.  Don't tell Curtis.

ha ha . . .so if not sooner, I'll see you New Year's Eve.

Don't forget to print out the directions to my place.

That's about what we experienced a year ago in mid-January. Well, it's what we
experienced when we weren't experiencing even colder temperatures. I don't know
exactly how my Oceanic decides what temperature to display in the log, but after one
of my dives the log said it was 73. We had a lot of runoff from recent rains, and the
DM's (who were mostly freezing their a.ses off) said that's why the water was
unusually cold. On the dive with the 73 reading I distinctly remember it being
obviously colder as I swam back to shore against the outgoing tide carrying all that
runoff. If Greg brings a hurricane with him you'd better hope it has lots of *warm* rain.

I just got back from 10 days in the Western Caribbean.  Grand Cayman was
80F, and Cozumel and Belize were 81F.  I wore a 3mm shorty and was very damn
comfortable.  I even unzipped it a few times.  My friend dove in just a
t-shirt and was a little cool.

BTW, Cayman and Cozumel had a lot of sand on the reef due to the hurricanes.
Also I've never dived any of these sites and was surprised at how few fish
there were compared to the Keys.  But I still loved it.  The weather was
great, especially compared to the harsh winter we're having in Orlando.  :-)

Just back from 20 days on Roatan.  I dove 14 of them (missed a few due to
travel, Xmas Day, New Year's Day, and a couple of hangovers). The water temp
was 78-79 and most everyone was freakin' cold, especially those wearing
shorties.  The weather improved immensely the second week and third week,
which made the boat trips and surface intervals more bearable.  Still, I
wore my full 3 mil and a hood.  shiver.  I've never had to wear my hood
before.  I always got by quite nicely with my "banana".

You're welcome.

However, the water was often 80 where I was.  Maybe that's because I pee in
my wetsuit.

Or maybe it's the way your computer registers water temp.  You may recall I
had two computers with me on this trip.

One read pretty consistently 81 degrees.  I couldn't figure out why I was so
cold if the water was 81 degrees, since normally I'm reasonably comfortable
at that temp.

Then I started using the new Versa Pro too.  All of their advise concerning
time in water, depth and such were virtually equal, except for water temp,
where the Versa Pro consistently showed 2 degrees below what the Surveyor
had been showing for temp.

That said, there were one or two dives where the water temp was 81, but not
enough of them, not near enough of them.

Speaking of frigid waters, how cold will I be in Belize in March?  The
Nekton materials threaten that the water can get as cold as the low-to-mid
70s.  Is this for real?  I might as well stay home if that's the case.

Don't know, haven't been in March.  Well, OK, I've been there on Mar. 1, one
time.  I didn't dive that day and during the 10 preceeding days, my computer
read 81F on most dives.  Of course, it was the offending computer that told
me the water was 81 when this trip when in truth it was only 79F.  Now, all
that said, I was not cold on the late Feb trip.  I've also been there in
mid-April.  My computer read 81F for the most part, though occasionally it
was a degree or two cooler.  I was not cold on that trip either, and the
weather was sublime, with calm seas.  I gather that is somewhat rare in
April.

Take your 5 mil, wear a hood.

My Suunto says 81.  But it lies.

I don't know which one of mine lies.  All I know is that it was the coldest
I've ever been in 81 degree water.

If only ... 79 degrees is pretty balmy.

Most of my dives last year have been in 60 - 65, Ok I'll admit that means
using a 5mm semi-dry.

My dive colleagues dive throughout winter where at best it's around 50
degrees, but they are then in Dry Suits.

Heh heh.  Come on up to the Lakes.  Routine is 50-55 and
we're diving in 5-7mm full suits or farmer johns.  I don't
switch to dry unless it's in the low 40s.  It's not uncommon
for it to dip to 38 under the thermocline around 60-75 feet.
Brisk! :-)

I once heard a divemaster for a BlackBeard's trip apologize
for the cold water, where it dipped to 70 degrees at the
thermocline.  I had to chuckle.  I spent the whole trip in a
3mm shorty sweating to death.  It comes down to what you're
used to, and I think those of us who grew up diving the
Great Lakes just have more tolerance (or more fat layers).
;-)  All that good Norwegian blood.

Many of my friends dive throughout the winter to where at best it's around
32 degrees, but they are then in Dry Suits.

They can have it.  :^)

I know you Canucks are wussies, but dry suits for 90-degree water?  That's
ridiculous.

Heh.  Should we require Fahrenheit or Celsius in all temperature
discussions?

An' in 'merka, we call 32 degree F water ICE.   Mmmmmm...ice
diving....of course this winter has been a little too warm to lay
down a good ice layer.
