Anyone dive in Antigua?   We're planning a trip there and was curious if
I should bring my dive gear.  We dove the BVI many times and suspect
it's similar.

The only dives I did there were a few years ago - I thought the diving was
poor, with bleached coral and a poor dive centre (Jolly Divers, in Jolly
Harbour) - but it may have improved since 2000.

Have a good time - it's not a huge island - but go and have a look at the
sights, English Harbour & Betties Hope are worth the trip (Nice bar in
English Harbour).

and isn't Antigua one of those watering holes for the --what shall I call them
-- the "Eastern Establishment" types?

Those seedy people whose inherited money has nearly run out, identified by their
shabby dress (too cheap to send their clothes out to be cleaned) or those who
might have a cottage down on the Cape, or perhaps up on the North Shore, a by
now ramshakle summer house that they inherited from their New England forebears?

They are an example of the well-known English aphorism ...."Gutter to gutter in
three generations!"

I'm talking about those who speak with that affected Connecticut lock-jaw kind
of speech?

They might even be from Greenich.

You can hear them saying things like...

"Andrea and Chas are playing tennis today!"  ...the tone of condescension is so
creepy that you can't believe your ears!

I've never encountered any of that group who cared two hoots in hell about scuba
diving.

Their funny speech is only exceeded by being totally out of touch with the real
world.

Yes, some of them still winter for a few weeks in Antigua!

....huh??  I'm from Texas so I don't know what you're talking about.
I just want to know if I need to bring my dive gear or not to bother.
Graham gives me the impression it may not be worth it.

As far as Connecticut - Greenwich is beautiful as well as the rest of
New England.

I'll be there on business and thought to bring my dive gear.  I won't
actually be on Antigua but on one of the Motu's where Rumby resort is
located - hopefully the reefs will be better.

I did 4 dives out of the St James's resort last year. It was alright.
Not great, but the viz was good, there were fish around. So I think it's
worth taking your kit if you're going anyway. It was pretty pricey though
at about $100 for 2 dives and the bottom time was restricted by the 40
mins and I've sucked my tank dry mob.
