Now that the Spiegel Grove is upright, and I never have made it out to
Looe Key NP, what are peoples' preferences for where to stay?

Looking at a quick getaway; preferably with some waterfront sand for Mrs.

I don't think they have waterfront sand in the keys.  You might want
to consider Key West for the Looe Key part (half hour drive) and Key
Largo for the Speigel part.  If it was me, I split the difference and
stay in Marathon.

There are at least 2 places that I know of with waterfront sand.
Windham Casa Marina in Key West (probably under $300/night) and the
Continental Inn in Key Colony Beach just north of Marathon

You might also try Little Palm  or possibly the Rainbow Bend Resort on
Grassy Key.  I've never stayed at the Rainbow Bend, but I have eaten
there, and they have a beach.  It is east (toward Miami) from
Marathon.

All those places (except probably the Continental Inn which is in the
AAA book and about $100-200/night and has a kitchen in the unit) are
mega expensive places.  Little Palm is $750 and up per night.  I can't
imagine at those prices that they don't have a beach.  It is where the
JFK movie with Cliff Robinson was filmed.

There is some waterfront sand, but you're going to have to look for it.
Bahia Honda State Park, for example, has a nice beach, but I'm not sure it
combines the beach with the kind of accomodations you and your wife might
prefer.

try the Sheraton in Key Largo, beach, pools, food.  Sheraton Beach Resort
Key Largo
but expensive. (we have a family member working for them, so cheap for us).
