Thinking of Cozumel

Joe English - 05 Nov 2005 03:09 GMT My wife and I are contemplating a dive trip to Cozumel. She doesn't scuba, not a problem - she likes to shop. I have my preferences on dive ops, would you guys go this quick after the devastating hurricane? I really don't even give a damn about the viz - I was thinking more of pumping some $$ (very little in the big scheme of things) into the local economy
Ron Lee - 05 Nov 2005 14:51 GMT Joe, I would go but check hotel availability first. It is problematic. Here is one reference.

But they still have one black mark in my book:
"That means that everyone in the group must come up together, hopefully lead by a divemaster that has deployed an inflatable marker."
http://www.aldora.com/driftdivingcozumel.htm
Plenty of dive ops in Cozumel will let you ascend on your own or have some other procedure in place so that your dives aren't limited by the lowest common denominator.

I never dove with Aldora but I can't imagine they do what their web page says they do. First of all, who dives tables on Cozumel ?? I believe with most dive ops...guide/DM deploys a marker, heavy breathers ascend, you ascend with your buddy at 500-700 or so.
Greg Mossman - 06 Nov 2005 00:57 GMT > I never dove with Aldora but I can't imagine they do what their web page > says they do. First of all, who dives tables on Cozumel ?? > I believe with most dive ops...guide/DM deploys a marker, heavy breathers > ascend, you ascend with your buddy at 500-700 or so. Nope. Aldora ascends as a group. And they were, at least when I dove them, very proficient at the "Mexican" drift dive (a term I recently heard on a dive boat in Kauai). On one dive, the Aldora DM actually wanted the entire group to hold hands and fin together against a strong current. Google "aldora sucks" for more information.

Not sure what you're disagreeing with other that just reinforcing your opinion of Aldora. BTW, I've read all the "Aldora sucks" threads long ago and would not dive with them simply because I have my personal favorite. I've been on 200+ drift dives in Mexico but never been on a "Mexican" drift dive.
Reef Fish - 05 Nov 2005 21:23 GMT > >> Joe, also look at Dave's opinions/observations on the Wilma link at > >> www.aldora.com > >> > >> Ron Lee > > Mossman tells me Aldora sucks. True. But that was when Greg was a Clueless Newbie in Coz, as well as in diving. And for the REASONS Greg gave for his slam of Aldora, I awarded him the title of "Anti-Aldora IDIOT", as Ron Lee had the title "Aldora IDIOT" for years already.
> I've heard that when I dove Aldora, Dillehay was absent. Perhaps things are > better now. The presence or absence of Dillehay was entirely irrelevant to the issue raised.
> But they still have one black mark in my book: > > "That means that everyone in the group must come up together, hopefully lead > by a divemaster that has deployed an inflatable marker." That's in part because MOST of the Aldora fans were Aldora IDIOTS, and they suck -- literally, as in "air sucking pigs" of which Ron Lee is the champion, both as an air sucking pig AND an Aldora IDIOT. That's why Aldora give them the 120 steel tanks so that some of them can last almost as long with that tank of air than I last with an AL80, diving to 200 fsw.
The one-up all-up policy is Dellehay's self-protection for someone like ME diving with their 120 steel and lasts more than 2 hours in the dive when the Aldora IDIOTs are out of air in 30 minutes.
> http://www.aldora.com/driftdivingcozumel.htm Aldora has plenty other nonsense policies catered to Aldora IDIOTS.
> Plenty of dive ops in Cozumel will let you ascend on your own or have some > other procedure in place so that your dives aren't limited by the lowest > common denominator. If you think that's bad, just think about having a dive computer for your own dive, and are then told that the DM's dive computer dictates the limits in all dives. That's not only stooooopid (according to any expert on using dive computers that Rule Number 1 is that you should NOT use someone else's computer/profile for your own dive), that's outright UNSAFE.
But Aldora IDIOTS, of whom Ron Lee has appointed himself to be the spokesman, the brag has always been "long how much longer I can now dive on one tank!" or some other equally ridiculous excuses.

Feel better now Bob Ling. I have a suggestion Bob Ling. Go through all your postings and determine how many times you use the word "idiot" or "idiots" and based upon total number of posts (which you seem to use as a measure of your self-esteem), calculate your idiot/message ratio.

For the posts I replied to Ron Lee, the idiot/message ratio is at least
3.14159, because Ron Lee is such an IDIOT, proven over and over again.
For the OTHER posts of mine, while there are many IDIOTS in newsgroups, they are negligible compared to the non-idiot posters. Therefore, the idiot/message ratio (excluding Ron Lee) of my 100,000 posts is at most 0.005.
No context for Ron Lee to be the net IDIOT of all time.
See, for this post, your IDIOT ratio easily exceeded your average of 3.14159.

Alan Street has absolutely NO LIFE, and he is an IDIOT's IDIOT, which is proven in the ng archives.

He was in rec.travel.air and > rec.travel.cruises I have never, ever read rec.travel.cruises. I dispise cruise ships. But obviously this "cross-posting" thing is a little hard for you to grasp, isn't it?
As for following you, it's pretty much impossible to read any newsgroup you frequent without stepping in one of your verbal cowpies. Every once in a while I feel the urge to respond to one of your more outrageous claims. That's not worship, it's ridicule.
I seem to remember another person in rec.scuba who had a problem telling the difference between ridicule and worship. May we expect you to follow his path to its logical conclusion?
> too, sticking his nose into the posts in which I kicked two IDIOTS in > those groups. The only people you kicked were in your deluded little mind. Tchiowa kicked your a.s all over the place and showed you up for the lightweight, inexperienced and lying little leisure traveller you are. People in rec.travel.air think you're just as much of a buffoon as do the people in rec.scuba.*
> Alan Street has absolutely NO LIFE, and he is an IDIOT's IDIOT, which > is proven in the ng archives. Where would you be without your precious archives, Feesh? They're your life and your alter-ego. Of course, everyone reading them except you finds that they tell a tale of a sad, washed up little old man who can only feel good when he insults everyone who dares challenge him.
Enjoy your cruise. Personally, I'd think spending all this time in an internet lounge of a cruise ship would be a sign of mental illness. But as you proudly claim, it's your life and you are the only person who dictates how you spend your time (except, of course, for that little monkey on your back).
As for me, I'm back on the road again this week and next (presenting a paper, chairing a session at a conference and giving the grad students I fund a hard time <g>). Lightweight travel by some standards, but I'll still be spending some time in airport lounges. Who knows, I might even use some of it to read a couple of Usenet newsgroups ;-)

> The only people you kicked were in your deluded little mind. Tchiowa > kicked your a.s all over the place and showed you up for the > lightweight, inexperienced and lying little leisure traveller you are. The Bangkok IDIOT made FIVE consecutive ERRORS in his last 5 posts. He was kicked this morning before I read any of the rec.scuba IDIOTS.
> People in rec.travel.air think you're just as much of a buffoon as do > the people in rec.scuba.* Obviously you haven't read either group much. Granted there are more IDIOTS re-surfacing in rec.scuba during this Reef Fish worshipping Festival, the IDIOTS in air.travel have long been silenced except this clueless newbie Tchiowa you side with.
Check out the long-time FORMER idiots in rec.travel.air: Vitaly Shmatikov (changed his posting name now to VS), Paul Tauger (now changed his name to PTravel), and the all time professional troll, Michael Voight, of a thousand aliases, recently known as mrtravel.
They all learned their lesson and STOPPED being a pest on me.
Not so the IDIOTS in rec.scuba. That's how clueless you are!
> > Alan Street has absolutely NO LIFE, and he is an IDIOT's IDIOT, which > > is proven in the ng archives. > > Where would you be without your precious archives, Feesh? I would have had it in my photographic memory. I also had them in my own archived, known as the BHD, so show IDIOT the actual evidence. Google just made it easy to catch LIARS like Lee Bell, Alan Street, Ron Lee, and the rest of the newsgroup IDIOTS when they resort to LIES.
> As for me, I'm back on the road again this week and next (presenting a > paper, chairing a session at a conference and giving the grad students > I fund a hard time <g>). Nepotism? Does anyone attend your session? What an IDIOT you are.
I have been the Program Chairman of International and National Meetings, and the last ASA Annual Meeting I went to in San Francisco, in 2003, FOUR of my former doctoral students were presenting papers there.
If you are a NOBODY in recreational newsgroups compared to my experience, you are INVISIBLE and completely negligible in academia.
Get a LIFE, Alan Street, and buy some Clue on REALITY.
In the Google Web section, I found this Alan Street,
*> Alan Street got involved in Scouting years ago, to fit in. Now, the
*> 17-year-old with Down Syndrome
That sound like a perfect fit of you, Alan! LOL
Certainly sounded more intelligent than that Alan G. Street in the same
Google web hits. That Alan G. Street had and did absolutely NOTHING of any significance to anyone.

Al - 06 Nov 2005 01:53 GMT Joe, My wife & I were in Cozumel during Wilma at Scuba Club Cozumel. You couldn't ask for a better bunch of people than the staff there! I think they will be open around the 12th. This was our third trip. I know they already have power back at the resort. check out their web site. Dives leading up to Wilma were great - good DMs and good boat crews.
Town may be more problematic - some sections had heavy devastation, others not too bad. I know some sections of the square were already re-opening on Wednesday after the hurricane. Give SCC a call - ask for Sofia - I'm sure they will give you the straight scoop.

YellowRoseCozumel - 08 Nov 2005 19:24 GMT Joe, Cozumel and its operators appreciate your support. It is not too soon to come- if you can get a flight. Within the next two weeks, those hotels that have not yet opened downtown, will be open. Virtually all the hotels on the water and especially south of town experienced serious damage including loss of piers making it impossible to load/unload. Aldora Pier downtown is functional although damaged. It is within walking distance to many downtown hotels. Right now, for your wife, shopping will be limited. The cruise ships are due to begin docking in Cozumel Nov 14; however, it is unrealistic to expect all the waterfront shops to be open.
Re: diving in Cozumel and some comments that were made in other posts. For the most part, you can expect diving on the tables although most divers *wear* computers. When your dive master says "ok, this dive we're going to 80 ft for 30 min," he/she is essentially diving the tables. It is a typical dive here- wham, bam, thank you ma'am. Most, but not all, operators conduct the dives this way- it is mostly a function of economics. Although uncommon, there are operators that accommodate heavy breathers or handle them in such a way that these divers do not dictate the length or profile of the dive. Finally, when surfacing or separating from a group, please keep in mind that safety is the most important aspect that should not be taken for granted.
Safe diving to you and best regards!

I love Cozumel and have spent many vacations diving there. Plaza Glorius is no longer a hotel, but now a condo. I wouldn't stay there anyway.
If you want to see what's available, give Al at Bay Adventures a call. They are located in Florida and have many properties. Their website is www.bayadventures.com
One week we spent there, we rented a home close to the supermarket. It is called Casa Carlita. http://www.cozumel-rental.com/
Not on the water, but it is on a side street. I haven't been there for several years, but when we were there maid service was included in the very reasonable rent. Unless you stay in the Day's Inn, this will be a very inexpensive home to rent.
I'd recommend that you get a rental car, we always rent the Jeep from Avis. Diving, I recommend Dive with Martin.
All diving in Cozumel is drift diving so you don't even have to bone up on your navigation! The captain will follow your bubbles.
I've been diving for over 40 years and this is on my short list of places to go to.
Hope you have a great vacation!
One other suggestion. Take your wife to the square in the center of town and feed the Mariachies mucho pasos and they will play for you all night! The food is great, the people are great, the diving is great.

BillD - 23 Apr 2006 03:13 GMT We went to the Reef Club Resort and loved it. We got a junior suite and VIP wrist band by buying $225 vouchers here http://reefclubresort.com/specials.htm which also has all the inof on the resort. He is still selling them at that price. I figured we'e go back a lot so I bought 20 of them from the resort which was the smallest amount they would sell. I want to get rid of a few for $150. If you feel this is just a sales pitch just buy them from the other guy but using the vouchers is the way to go. Our total cost for 2 people was $1210 for the huge room with L deck with a hot tub, VIP restaurants and bars and beach and all food and drink included. The VIP part (it makes you a time share owner for a week is the basic deal) gets you a discount at the Dive Op on site and guarantees you a spot on the boats.
At the airport when we arrived we cut a deal with one of the timeshare sales guys. They covered our cab to and from the airport, cab back and for to the ferry, the ferry to the mainland where we had to spend 90 touring timeshare and eating breafast (included) at it, they then paid for the rental car and admission to the Tuluum ruins ( worth seeing)
Hope this helps.
