Avoid the big boats out of the Whitsundays......to many divers on board,
for some good diving and less populated dive sites you need the Coral Sea
which is farther out than the GBR and out of reach of the big day boats.

There are some great dive sites up the east coast, (not done the west
side).....Noosa, Byron Bay, South West Rocks, the Yongala out of
Townsville, the Whitsundays.......the Ribbon Reefs........

Check out   www.diversionoz.com       they are extremely professional,
admin very good, been with them loads of times.

Plus the boats out of the Whitsundays are all geared for people doing
their OW courses. Agree with the Coral Sea recommendation, the viz is a
lot better, as is the coral because there's no runoff out there.

Done a few Aussie liveaboards. Trip reports on my website.

Reading your Maldive trip report and then the Gib report..........
We found the Maldives (2000) to be a bit bland on the dive front, very
expensive for the diving, we had all our own kit and they only knocked
$5usd of for a house reef dive (unescorted). The boat NOT included is a
bit of a con, how on erth do they expect to do a dive package for you
without a boat ? its stupid.

The drinks thing got to me a little, i mean.....how much can you take from
duty free..........

The Gibralter diving was a bit like yours too, their kit.......ragged old
suit for my wife...........we had a few nice dives there though, that was
the back end of 98 after we had certified.

Depends if the island's got a decent house reef, doesn't it? You could do
many of your dives on that if it does. You wouldn't expect to pay the same
for a boat dive as a reef dive, would you?

Which island did you go to?

As for price, well it used to be expensive, but I've found that the prices
haven't increased that much over the years, so it's got cheaper. The
Caribbean is cheaper, but many operators still expect you to do 45 min
dives there and only have a short surface interval, so the second dive
can't be that long or deep.

I should have said they only knocked $5usd off if you dived the house
reef, I'm not used to paying anything for house reef dives....

Giravaru, North Male Atol, you could see Male, and it took about 40
minutes by Dhoni......very small......

The not letting you take drinks onto the Island.......i just meant that
you can hardly take enough for the whole holiday......
