I don't know anybody that smokes while diving or that fails to cover up
speedos, for that matter. Keep the marine environment clear of audio,
visual and olfactory pollution.
If I'm not mistaken, either the state of Florida or some of its
municipalities recently passed legislation banning car radios played at
volumes that can be heard more than a set number of feet from the vehicle.
It's about time. It should be legal to shoot the speakers in any car whose
woofers drown out my entire stereo system from two cars away, despite
everybody's windows being rolled up. I don't wish harm to the people who
own the speakers, but perhaps the financial burden of replacing speakers
every day would bring home the fact that the volume knob on a stereo works
both ways. I wish they'd pass similar legislation regarding boat radios in
areas where boaters tend to congregate, sand bars, for example, and
particularly in marinas.

And then ban Harleys too, or let me shoot their engines. I live on a street
where some local bikers love to ride up and down revving their engines as
loudly as any over-amped woofers.

I'm sorry to say I agree with you. There's little excuse for the wide open
exhaust system on most Harleys except, of course, when properly muffled,
they sound kind of sickly, not up to the macho Hell's Angel image at all.

Too bad they can't go from one to the other with a flick of the switch. I
have no problem with the noise on the open highway. In fact, it's helpful
in California where lane splitting is allowed because you can hear them
approaching when you might otherwise miss them in your blind spot and
sideswipe them during a lane change (been there, done that). But even
though my street has a state highway number, it's purely residential and
hardly "open" highway. It is also, unfortunately, very straight, and with
its slight downhill grade, very tempting.

Actually, that should not be all that big a problem. Cutouts that could be
opened from inside the car were pretty common when I was a kid. I don't
know anybody that used them on motorcycles, but lots of cars had them.
My street is roughly one block long and I still have a problem. There's a 4
lane road two houses away that's straight as an arrow, with no intersecting
streets for a mile or so. You may assume it's a drag strip for just about
everybody less sedate than I've become. The Harley's aren't the only
problems. Both cars and Jap bikes are at least as annoying and, at least as
common.
