i'm thinking of going to the maldives the last week of june / first week of
july. i realize it's not the best season, but may be the only time i could
go before next spring.
has anyone been in june/july? i know it's monsoon but i've read that on the
western side of the islands and in the south it's milder. i am still
concerned that i may rain or be cloudy half the time. also, even if the
weather is ok, is the visibility worsened because of rougher waters?
thanks in advance to anyone who's been there,
david

The Maldives is a collection of some 1100-1200 tiny Islands, the one i was
on i used to snorkle round in 40 minutes......they stretch for some
considerable distance north to south.......weather and visibility dont
conform to brochure graphs I'm affraid......there is always a trade of in
life......great this..........poor that.......great everything.....I'm
still looking.
You have to pick the best "general" time and go with that.
My recolection is one of exorbitant prices to dive.....$48usd for every
dive, and a little less for diving the house reef on our own, oh....and we
had all our own kit.
And worst of all for us was the diving..........yes it was warm.....well
26-27C..........yes the viz was ok to good.......but whats the point of
diving in warm clear water if there is not really much to see....
Now if its "WOW" diving your after..........then you need to get yourself
to Malaysia/Indonesia.........

I've had three trips to the Maldives...and unless it has changed -- it was one
of the great diving destinations -- I don't recall ever having the opportunity
to get such close-up pictures of fish anywhere else.
Since I haven't been there in some years -- maybe its now "damaged goods" but
I hardly think so.
Also, I think the idea of going there in July is a poor one. I once went to
dive in the Seychelles in July and it was monsoon time -- just as it would be
in the Maldives --then a superior destination for divers.
The best "window" for diving in the Maldives and most of the Indian Ocean
insofar as I know from my trips there is the first two weeks of March.

Depends on which Island, 2 monsoons in the Maldives. East part of the
Maldives is sheltered in July. Stayed on Lohifushi last July anf the diving
was great. Lots of reef sharks, eagle rays and 10 Mantas on one cleaning
station. I've heard that West part of the Maldives in better from October to
March. So pick your island well and you should be fine in July
