I will be in Italy and Spain this summer, and I am determined to dive.
however, I don't know anyone who is knowledgeable about where to dive. I'm
diving with some people who are newly certified, and we are college
students, so we don't have a lot of money or experience combined. So, we're
looking for something simple. We'll be in the Veneto, Florence, Barcelona,
and Grenada. Right now we plan on stopping in cinqeterra and diving, but I
don't know what's in store there. Any advice??
Thanks!

You should definately go to the Medes Islands just north of Barcelona
http://marenostrum.org/nuestrascostas/cbbuceo/medes/indexi.htm imho.
Beautiful place to dive.

Yes, go to Estartit (by train, over Gerona) and book some boat dives on the
Medes Islands. You won't regret it.
There's accomodation for each budget (ask the dive center).

Are the Medes island north of Barcelona in the region called the "Cadaquez?"
If you have to dive in the Mediterranean, I've heard that the Cadaquez is
half-way decent...I mean...given that the Mediterranean would not be anyone's
idea of a dive vaction. The Mediterranean does not appear on the radar screen
of any dive touring organizations that I've heard of....

Yes... its north of Barcelona... but the Medes islands are not "just" the
med. Its a reservation and therefore there are an abundance of fish and
general wildlife. Add to that the caves and caverns at the islands that are
great divesites - this makes the Medes islands a great place to dive. I have
dived in Greece - commercial though ;) - Ibiza and the Medes islands and
this is definetely the best place imho.

Thank you! I read the article and, surprisingly, i think we can afford
something that cool. I'm so excited. I'm worried about getting there
though. We have Eurail passes, but that's the only form of getting around.
Do you know link for a specific dive shop?

When I was there I lived at the Hotel Lesilles or hotel Illes.... cant
remember it for sure..... but the hotel had a diving center attached to it
so it was quite easy.
.......found the link before I posted... clever me :D

Diving centres everywhere. From Nerja (Let say southern Spain Granada's
riviera) to Reggio (on the other side of western mediterranean sea).
About 30 euros a dive in supercrowded-summertime diving programs.
But...
If ever you can do it with 40/60m depth-used fellows (deco-friendly) you
might be eligible for great "wrecks". All around the "cuenca"
By the way the mediterranean holds the record of the biggest great white
shark actually "fished".

Cinque Terre. Good place, not too exprensive. Stay away from Porto Fino,
though. Too expensive, too busy, too many boats. Camogli, Monterosso, are
good, can find small B&B's.
If you're down around Florence, try Elba or the Isola del Giglio. Good
diving from there, not too expensive.
Have fun!
