We are going to spend some time in Playa del Carmen and are looking for
recommendations on dive operations there as well as Cancun and Cozumel
(we understand it is only a ferry ride away). Any input or advise
based on your experience would be appreciated.
Looking forward to a great vacation. Have not been under water for
three years. Last dive trip was to Curacoa in May 2002.
Caught a small case of cancer somewhere along the way (found about it
in June 2002). Had chemo and radiation which killed the better part of
a year.
Decided to go ahead and build our dream house (figured if the cancer
didn't kill me something else would anyway). That killed another year
just to be able to move in. Been landscaping and doing the "sweat
equity" thing for another year.
My how time does fly. The best news is that I am as clean as a cat's
A#$ two years after radiation. Thank you Jesus for small favors.

I suggest either Caballito del Caribe,
(http://www.seahorsecozumel.com/) or Seafaris in Cozumel. Both shops
cater to day trippers from the mainland. They do this by leaving from
a dowtown pier at 10 am.

Cancun diving sucks. So does Playa (and Puerto Morelos). Go to Cozumel.
Even better, stay in Cozumel and save on the ferry fare.

A guy recently caught cancer by being abandoned by a dive boat. Watch out
so the same thing doesn't happen to you.

If Jesus granted small favors, why did he give you cancer in the first
place? Perhaps TonyP can explain it to you since he knows Jesus better than
I do.
Still, there are plenty of Jesuses in Mexico so you can thank them all on
your dive trip. A few pesos apiece is the recommended gratuity for cancer
relief.

Beaches suck everywhere. They promote skin cancer.

If I'm a dick it's God's will. Who am I to thwart the will of God by
waiting for Bob?

I have been in Akumal when there were almost no fish (in June), and have
heard it as a frequent complaint about the place. We were there in
October, and there were lots of fish and a healthy reef.
There is an incredible wall 10 minutes from the beach at Akumal, but the
top is at 200 ft. There are lots of really big fish there.

I was in Cozumel three weeks ago, did all my diving with Deep Blue, and
found them to be very accommodating as far as dive times, sites, etc. You
may want to shy away from some of the "advanced" sites since your skills may
be a bit rusty, but Punta Sur-Devil's Throat was a blast.
