I was thinking of going to the East End of Grand Cayman this summer.  I have
been there before and stayed at Cayman Diving Lodge.  Their website says
they are closed due to extensive damage from Hurricane Ivan.
Is this not a good time to go to Grand Cayman?  I was planning on staying at
either the Reef Resort or Compass Point and diving with Ocean Frontiers.
Are the restaurants on the East End opened?
Thanks,
David

Check out www.underwater-video-images.com it has some REAL media clips of
the diving, one seems good - String Ray City.

This site seems to have a lot of information on if and when particular
resorts are opening:

http://www.caymanvacations.com/indexmenu.htm?general/ivan.htm&2

If you don't see what you are looking for, put the name in the search box,
and it will probably come up;  Seven Mile Beach took a heavy hit.

A couple things on that website seemed curious to me

1) They said the West Bay reefs had been cleaned of algae, yet said nothing
about sand. The reefs I have seen after hurricanes and their effects are
generally covered in sand, which takes a number of years to remove. It
was only in 2003 that the reefs in Bonaire were finally cleaned of the
   sand from Lenny's wave effects.

2) I was in Mex recently and most of the beaches that suffered any hurricane
effects lost sand, so it was good to hear GC actually gained. Maybe some
of the ironshore on the southern end of 7 Mile got covered :^)

I noticed Turtle Beach Villas wasn't reopening. About 14 years ago we stayed
there. We had reserved a ground floor unit, but when we arrived they had us
on the second floor. My wife wasn't thrilled, but we made do, unpacked, had
dinner and went to bed. In the morning we looked out to the beach and it was
devastated. The pool was filled with sand, people walking on the beach were
engulfed in soft sand, as if it were quick-sand. Not knowing what was going
on we walked downstairs and when we got to the bottom found that all the
ground floor units were washed out. The sea had come from the beach and ran
right thru glass sliders into the units, and in some case out the back doors
into the parking lot.

It was a mess. It wasn't anything of hurricane force but was a weather
condition (nor'wester) that is particulalry damaging to 7 Mile.

And we were complaining because we got second floor :^) As it turned out, it
was a moment of good fortune when the put us on the second floor. The folks
on the ground units did not find alternate accomodations and all returned to
their homes in the states and europe. I have no idea if they lost their
money or if Turtle beach was ever able accomodate their losses. After a week
on GC we went over to CB for a week, and they suffered none of the same
damage.

But I remember Turtle Beach and think it is a shame to see another small
Cayman property being closed.

I have just booked a week at Ocean Frontiers to stay at their new condos,
Compass Point.

I will be there from Wednesday April 20 to Wednesday April 27. It is part of
Earth Day and there is a clean up activity scheduled and a Reef Watch
Survey.

If anyone is around at that time, e-mail at the address below or give a
shout at OF and perhaps we can bend an elbow (sic) then.

But then again, what do I know?

Hi David,

We own two timeshare weeks at Plantation Village on 7 mile beach and they
STILL are not open!  Our weeks start last week in August and we fear we will
miss out this year.  Last year we dove with Ocean Frontiers and found them to
be one of the top dive operations we have used.  We did have a rather long
drive each am, about 45 minutes each way, but it was well worth it.  If you
stay on the east end, I'd probably not take the drive to Stingray City which
is on the north west of the Island (actually just north of 7 mile beach, where
most dive boats leave from the marina. If you do venture into town, it might
be worth an afternoon excursion.  Most of the divers I know who I met at G.C.
recommend the trip as a novelty.  Just don't do it when the cruise ships are
in and they are taking out pax on a snorkel tirp.  Might get crowded.
We stayed for 16 days diving about 10 of those, and didn't get at all bored.
My wife and I own our businesses and daily contact with our office while on
vacation is necessary.  There are now high speed Internet Cafe which we took
advantage of (either bring a laptop or use their pc's) if you have a similar
requirement.  One other thing, bring pleanty of money!  The fixed CI of 1 CI
to $1.25 us hasn't changed and probably never will as it's not a floating
exchange.

If you do go, when you get back please post your thoughts on the condition of
the island.  Have a great trip.
