Hi all --
My wife and I are celebrating our 20-year anniversary in 2006; we're
planning to go to either Cancun or Cozumel.
On our previous trip to Cancun, we stayed at the Camino Real, which had
lots of shopping within walking distance (which she liked).
On our previous trip to Cozumel, we stayed at the Iberostar, which had
an on-site dive shop just minutes from the Palancar reef (which I
liked, but she doesn't dive) and it was all-inclusive (which we both
liked). However, it's quite a haul into town.
I'm looking for a recommendation for a hotel that's a combination of
all of the above -- all-inclusive, on-site dive shop close to good
diving, and close to town. I did some research at funjet.com but
nothing really jumped out at me as fitting the description.
Many thanks in advance,
Matt

Scubaclub Cozumel is quite good.

Fits all the requirements listed.
On Cozumel it's your choice, long ride to the dive sites or long ride
to town. Considering that I usually snooze on the way out and a taxi
ride costs $15-20, I chose to stay close to town.

> My wife and I are celebrating our 20-year anniversary in 2006;
Congratulations. Not many marriages survive that long!
My wife and I had our 20th anniversary BEFORE she learned how to
scuba. We had our 40th anniversary last year, and she had logged
over 1,300 dives, at least 500 of which in Cozumel.
So, there's hope for you and your wife yet. :-)

I don't recommend staying at any all-inclusive. You get trapped in one
hotel and you miss much of the local atmosphere.
But if it's your preference, then go for it:

Use those criteria as your KEYWORDS for "advanced search" in
groups.google.com, and you'll find many threads (though most of them
are a few years old), and each thread will contain discussions of
the pros and cons of "all-inclusive", "on-site dive shop", "close
to town", etc., as well as some specific hotels.
If one of such hotels JUMPS out at me tomorrow (when I will be in
Cozumel), I'll post a follow-up. :-)

Happy hunting.

The resort formerly known as Sol Caribe comes close. I think it's
called Park Royale now. It's in Cozumel sort of across the street
from La Ceiba. I think it is all inclusive.

Hotel Cozumel & Resort is a good choice. It is only about a 15 minute
walk to downtown, has Dive Paradise on site, the largest swimming pool
on the island, and most of the dive ops will pick up at their pier. I
stayed elsewhere, but was picked up by Dive with Martin at this pier
every morning. The rooms are nice, friends who stayed there said the
all-inclusive plan was quite good and you can often find specials
through Apple Vacations for hotel/airfare. Good link to one of the
sites for them is: http://www.hotelcozumel.com.mx/

I will second Chucks recommendation, stayed there last April and dove with
Martin as well. For me all inclusive is way to go. Lunch in beach restaurant
after diving is a must, food was the best I had in Mexico so far. Biggest
pool on the island, short walk to town, clean and spacious rooms.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Coz with 2 dives/day for 2 weeks.
I'd go back in an heartbeat.
try the hacienda san miguel

excellent place to stay, it's beautiful and not all "resortish"
and I would also recommend diving with Deep Blue
http://www.deepbluecozumel.com/
post back here and let me know if Gabriel and Pepe are still diving with
Deep Blue (they are both excellent divemasters)
