Hi,

Lookin to go to The Brac Mar/Apr.

Is the Divi Tiara open after Ivan as some of the hotels on Grand Cayman
still appear to be closed due to damage.

I know it took some time to get it up and running after a previous hurricane

Thanks in advance

They are accepting online reservations,
(http://www.divi.com.ky/reserve.html).  That suggests that they are
open.

I was there a few years ago.  Great spot.  Trip report here:

Hugh Huntzinger was there in November, and sent me this information,
complete with pictures:

> How was Divi?

Okay, but clearly not as good as being with Gladys at Pirate's Point for
Thanksgiving :-)

BTW, check out this URL:

This _was_ a nice 45ft-ish Ketch that had reefed itself right near the South
Sound inlet on Little Cayman.  Customs found 700lbs of pot onboard and then
went to pull it off the reef, where it promptly sank.  The week that we
moved over to the Brac, it started to break up and Cayman Environmental was
seen towing pieces around the western point...presumably over to the Salt
Rocks dock to remove from the water.

> Did they get a new dock put in in time to start handling some boat
traffic?

They did get a new dock in ~6 weeks ago that allows for basic, "one boat"
operation.  It extends out the full extension from shore as the old one and
has a 10ft wide walkway going out, with an additional ~10ft of pilings for
the dive shed on each side, which forms a ~30ft wide "T" at its terminus.

I have some "as of October" photo's online at URL:

http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2004/brac/

The limitation of this dock was that they could only have one boat load
customers at a time, and they've started to work to expand the dock during
the first week in December.  According to DM Scott, the plan is to work on
the pier's west side of the "T", which would eventually measure out to 100ft
wide from the centerline of the dock.  Since the terminus already has 30ft
or so already done, this means that they have ~75ft to go to the left and
~75ft to go to the right to complete the "T".

Here's a photo of some of the work...

http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2004/brac/divi_dock_west_(2794).jpg

You can see that they've sunk 3 pilings on 10ft centers, which should take
the west wing out to half of its total width (~50ft wide of the eventual
100ft width).  Before we left ON 12/4/04, they had gotten these pilings
secured in a bit better with its permanent horitzontal stringer installed
across the sea-side of these three pilings.

Based on Scott's comments about the relative difficulty of sinking in these
pilings versus earlier ones, I'd say that they're working at a pace of less
than one of these 30ft of dock sections per week.  Nevertheless, since its
also now another week+ since this photo was taken, I'd venture to say that
this section is probably close to being done (I suspect that decking wood
might be a bottleneck for them).

FWIW, if you read this Job Announcement, it looks like Divi's not planning
on being done with the reconstruction (hopefully to really include the
timeshares) until July 05.  My understanding is that the first of these two
jobs is to replace an "Engineer" who had a bit of an overinflated ego
problem, but he was the only person on site who could get 'Foots' to do any
work.

http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2004/brac/Divi_job_listing_(1Dec04).jpg

'Foots' is the 7ft tall blond European (cough) "artist" who made the ugly
globe next to the Divi Bar and the concrete 'Eagle Ray' monstrocities that
are blighting the Brac...somehow, he got hired on as Head of Divi
Maintenance...and somehow got 'Status' despite not having anywhere near
enough years of residence.  As Hamlet would say, 'there's something rotten
in Denmark'.

FYI, there's also some photo's of the timeshare rennovation accessible under
the /brac/ URL directory too.  The short bottom line is that the old dock is
scattered around the timeshare grounds and it's a mess that they've not
bothered to clean up.  Max claims that there's "treasure" in the shitpile of
stainless steel bolts that can be salvaged for the new dock, plus he would
like to recycle some of the timbers for other projects, but the reality is
that they have a huge manpower shortage and can't afford such distractions
for 'small peanuts'.

> Was one of those signs left on the fence ours?

There's essentially no signs anywhere, as there's essentially no fences
around anywhere.

The only "sign of signs" was the cluster on the old band stand next to the
Bar (a structure that many people wish would have been destroyed by Ivan but
wasn't), plus some stuff that was on the inside roof of the new bar.  All
the signs down by the diveshop or compressor are gone.

BTW, the new Bar is doing OK...it got a bunch of sand & rubble shoved up
underneath it, which physically raised its elevation up, and made some of
the handrails out-of-level.

> Is Cliff still doin omlets and pancakes in the morning?

Yes, and it does seem that he's in better health vs. last year.

Gotta run,

.

Maybe he has some more current information, but I think this answers your
question.

As George alludes to below, the short answer is "yes".

Here's some updates:

> has a 10ft wide walkway going out, with an additional ~10ft of pilings for
> the dive shed on each side, which forms a ~30ft wide "T" at its terminus.

Update#1:  as of 9 January, the dock now has the west side wing complete
(allows 3 boats at dock at once), and they're waiting for a shipment of
decking lumber to complete the entire middle section and dive shed.

Update#2:  as of 16 January, Bonnie Hanley (who was at the Adventures
Travel show in NYC) is claiming that the new dock was completed.  Gosh,
either an astounding miracle has occurred in the past 8 days, or Bonnie
is sadly misinformed and passing along bad information.  Since Bonnie
didn't know that Barry White is now on-island for reconstruction, I have
to conclude that this is bad information and not ground truth.

My recommendation remains to only trust actual photographs from any
known affected Resort.  For example, here's what the "cleanup" looked
like away from the hotel side of the resort as of a month ago.  YMMV if
ten weeks was enough time to get their property cleaned up while they
were "waiting for supplies":

http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2004/brac/divi_tiara_pano3.jpg

...there's been a claim made that they're finally hauling away all of
this crap, but no photos to prove it yet.

> BTW, the new Bar is doing OK...it got a bunch of sand & rubble shoved up
> underneath it, which physically raised its elevation up, and made some of

BTW, there is some additional news with the Bar in that they now have a
short food menu available here...its an on-site alternative to paying
full freight for dinner if you're not on the meal plan.

Hugh thanks for keeping us all updated.  Please continue to do so.
